In 2019 it was world news for fifteen days: the fall of Spanish toddler…

Just before the Nordstream pipeline was blown up in 2022, a similar attack takes place in Greece. Unknown divers plant explosives and blow up the underwater pipeline from the mainland to the Greek island of Aegina. It is called a terrorist act. The residents of the Greek island depend on this pipeline for clean water. It’s not the first time the pipeline has been sabotages. Why would anyone want to sabotage this water pipeline?
Series Description
The four part series Water Crime delves into the dark world behind drought and links the global water shortage to a crime scene including a victim, an eyewitness, a suspect and a perpetrator. A dead man in the Mexican desert, a Spanish toddler’s fatal fall into a well, a rape in Nairobi and explosions of a pipeline near a Greek island. Each episode in Water Crime shows a different place in the world where water disappears and moral dilemmas arise.

00:54.600 --> 00:59.400
When I came here in the 90s,
I saw straight away that this island is rich.
00:59.520 --> 01:02.480
I could make a fortune here.
01:02.600 --> 01:05.000
Little did I realize...
01:05.120 --> 01:10.520
that a very different world is lurking behind
this picture-perfect scenery.
01:15.760 --> 01:19.080
See that man walking over there?
That\'s me.
01:21.280 --> 01:24.840
Although I\'m not from here,
I know everything about the island.
01:28.880 --> 01:34.880
The locals live in this idyllic location
near Athens.
01:35.000 --> 01:38.080
Tourists come here
and throw their money around.
01:39.840 --> 01:44.000
You\'d think we have nothing
to complain about. Right?
01:45.800 --> 01:51.360
Well, unless we\'re talking about something
as innocuous as drinking water.
01:51.480 --> 01:54.000
That\'s when things get heated.
01:56.840 --> 01:58.280
And it doesn\'t stop there.
01:58.400 --> 02:02.720
That\'s when you realize
that Aegina is also a breeding ground...
02:02.840 --> 02:07.520
for corruption, threats,
life-threatening sabotage...
02:07.640 --> 02:11.840
and the irresistible temptation
of a Rolex watch.
02:15.000 --> 02:19.840
All over drinking water.
Let me just reiterate that.
02:19.960 --> 02:23.720
episode 2
an attack out at sea
02:33.880 --> 02:37.920
The National Lottery, folks.
The National Lottery jackpot.
02:38.040 --> 02:44.440
They say half the Greeks buy lottery tickets,
and the other half sells them.
02:47.240 --> 02:49.360
I sell them.
03:01.280 --> 03:06.840
People are fortunate to have me around.
I have sold the most winning tickets.
03:10.000 --> 03:11.400
True story.
03:14.480 --> 03:16.200
I won. Five euros.
03:16.320 --> 03:19.480
Buy your lottery tickets here
and fate will reward you.
03:19.600 --> 03:22.040
Okay. Thanks a lot.
03:24.520 --> 03:29.560
And if fate doesn\'t reward you, well,
you\'ve got to try a different approach.
03:52.000 --> 03:55.240
We\'re reaching out to our Greek ancestors
for help.
03:55.360 --> 03:58.360
We ask them to purify salt and water.
04:06.840 --> 04:08.520
Good morning.
-Morning.
04:11.600 --> 04:14.440
We did a ritual, a ceremony.
04:14.560 --> 04:18.160
We made an offering
to Zeus the Rainmaker.
04:18.280 --> 04:23.280
Hopefully after this offering
we\'ll get some rain.
04:24.640 --> 04:26.200
Exactly.
04:27.240 --> 04:31.080
From your lips to God\'s ears.
-That\'s the whole point.
04:34.480 --> 04:38.440
Is there enough water for the animals?
-No. Only until June.
04:38.560 --> 04:40.560
After that there\'s nothing.
04:44.640 --> 04:48.720
Zeus has always been a bit stingy
with the rain here.
04:48.840 --> 04:53.480
We have plenty of salt water.
Unfortunately, we can\'t drink that.
04:53.600 --> 04:56.920
With the arrival of tourists
and pistachio trees...
04:57.040 --> 05:00.720
the drinking water
was becoming an increasing problem.
05:04.640 --> 05:09.800
It was long before my time on the island,
but Flora was already here.
05:11.080 --> 05:15.320
She is ancient.
It feels like she\'s been here forever.
05:15.440 --> 05:17.880
Christodoulos, how are you doing?
05:18.000 --> 05:21.160
Don\'t think you can stop her for a chat.
05:21.280 --> 05:24.320
What\'s new?
-Have a seat.
05:24.440 --> 05:25.840
I have work to do.
05:25.960 --> 05:28.600
You always say that
when I ask you to have a seat.
05:28.720 --> 05:30.480
How are you?
05:30.600 --> 05:34.800
How are you doing today?
-I\'m fine.
05:34.920 --> 05:37.480
She\'s the island\'s working memory.
05:37.600 --> 05:42.920
Oh, and by the way, thanks to me
she once won 25,000 euros.
05:48.560 --> 05:51.120
We hardly get any rain.
05:51.240 --> 05:57.040
So the wells aren\'t being replenished.
05:57.160 --> 05:59.920
They have run dry. That saddens me.
06:00.880 --> 06:03.360
They\'re dirty and full of rubbish.
06:03.480 --> 06:06.040
I find it upsetting...
06:06.160 --> 06:11.880
that people don\'t get how important
the wells are. It\'s a real shame.
06:12.000 --> 06:16.040
I reckon we have about 25,000 residents
on the island.
06:16.160 --> 06:18.920
Come August, there are 100,000 people.
06:19.040 --> 06:22.680
How can there ever be enough water
for all of them?
06:25.920 --> 06:31.800
Since the island started to run out of water
life got increasingly complicated.
06:32.800 --> 06:36.200
We had to resort to bottled water.
06:37.000 --> 06:40.360
Whoever owns the island\'s water
has the power.
06:40.480 --> 06:45.160
And with power come guns, bribes...
06:45.280 --> 06:48.120
and a sabotage attack out at sea.
06:54.760 --> 07:00.560
On the night of July 13, an explosive device
blew up the underwater pipeline...
07:00.680 --> 07:06.160
that supplies Aegina with drinking water,
causing an eight-centimetre crack.
07:06.280 --> 07:12.240
Traces of explosives...
07:12.360 --> 07:15.040
and several stickers were found...
07:15.160 --> 07:20.680
indicating that it was a deliberate act
of sabotage, carried out by divers.
07:20.800 --> 07:23.320
We are talking about sabotage
by people...
07:23.440 --> 07:27.240
who want to stop the convenient
water supply to the island.
07:48.000 --> 07:50.760
Everyone was furious.
07:50.880 --> 07:54.840
Never before had I seen
the islanders unite.
07:54.960 --> 07:58.640
For weeks, it was all they talked about
in the coffee houses.
07:58.760 --> 08:02.240
Who did it?
How could this have happened?
08:02.360 --> 08:08.400
Who would be crazy enough to want this?
Someone, I suppose.
08:14.760 --> 08:18.440
Engineer Petropoulos
couldn\'t believe his ears.
08:18.560 --> 08:23.800
An attack on his pipeline?
He immediately jumped in his car.
08:23.920 --> 08:27.480
What else can I say?
It\'s an act of terrorism.
08:27.600 --> 08:33.680
And I still can\'t comprehend it,
to this very day.
08:33.800 --> 08:39.520
For someone,
in the month of July...
08:39.640 --> 08:44.800
to cut off the water supply...
08:44.960 --> 08:47.680
to thousands of people.
08:47.800 --> 08:51.600
It\'s dreadful.
I\'m still shocked.
08:55.120 --> 09:01.280
Let\'s get the crane and start loading up.
-I thought we\'d be getting food first.
09:01.400 --> 09:07.160
Our engineer never thought
that he would have to protect his pipeline...
09:07.280 --> 09:10.640
from terrorist attacks with explosives.
09:12.080 --> 09:16.680
As a guy selling lottery tickets, I was like:
Terrorism on Aegina? Seriously?
09:16.800 --> 09:18.480
What are the chances?
09:18.600 --> 09:25.680
We\'re not the kind of society
that needs to take that into account.
09:25.800 --> 09:31.680
I mean, this is Greece, not Israel.
You know what I mean?
09:31.800 --> 09:37.280
This attack occurred two to three months
before the attack on the Nord Stream.
09:49.560 --> 09:54.480
That night, diver Milonas got a call.
09:54.600 --> 09:59.640
He was told to grab his diving gear and
head over to the scene of the explosion.
10:02.280 --> 10:07.280
At some point, we were told...
10:07.400 --> 10:11.120
that people had heard explosions
during the night.
10:12.400 --> 10:15.960
I had no idea what had happened.
10:16.080 --> 10:19.680
So we round up the dive team...
10:19.800 --> 10:23.360
and discovered that the pipeline\'s
protective coating...
10:23.480 --> 10:27.640
at a depth of 12 to 14 metres...
10:27.760 --> 10:31.640
was ruptured.
10:38.880 --> 10:45.240
Our divers could quickly establish that
something was wrong with the pipeline...
10:45.360 --> 10:48.240
because it was leaking fresh drinking water.
10:49.320 --> 10:54.200
Fresh water in salt water undulates a bit,
so visibility becomes less clear.
10:54.320 --> 10:56.840
That\'s when we knew
something was wrong.
11:06.920 --> 11:11.320
Actually, this wasn\'t
the first sabotage attempt.
11:11.440 --> 11:14.480
So we were already a bit nervous.
11:14.600 --> 11:16.840
That\'ll be all.
11:19.560 --> 11:26.120
Me and a couple of my colleagues
sailed over to have a look.
11:26.240 --> 11:28.960
That\'s when I saw...
11:29.080 --> 11:36.160
these little holes that were drilled
in several different areas...
11:36.280 --> 11:41.840
with a drill bit measuring...
11:43.200 --> 11:46.440
I can\'t remember exactly,
I guess 10 millimetres.
11:46.560 --> 11:52.880
Big enough to let water
into the pipeline and sink it.
11:53.920 --> 12:00.080
Now remember: we were looking for
tiny holes in a 500-metre-long pipe.
12:00.200 --> 12:04.520
We had to locate every single one of them.
It set us back a year.
12:06.280 --> 12:09.200
This is where the pipeline ends.
12:09.320 --> 12:13.640
Let me show you.
In this bit here...
12:13.760 --> 12:19.680
they used a standard Black & Decker drill
and quickly drilled a hole.
12:19.800 --> 12:22.880
We did the same.
12:23.000 --> 12:28.880
And even though the material
is extremely strong...
12:29.000 --> 12:33.120
drilling a hole takes less than
five seconds.
12:34.280 --> 12:37.920
From Black & Decker
to professional explosives.
12:38.800 --> 12:46.120
Either the perpetrator is a fast learner,
or there are multiple parties involved.
12:46.240 --> 12:48.480
I\'m betting on the latter.
12:48.600 --> 12:51.720
Over here, we also love to speculate.
12:59.960 --> 13:05.360
I am shocked that someone
tried to destroy the pipeline.
13:06.600 --> 13:12.320
I couldn\'t believe it when I read about it.
I thought it was an accident.
13:12.440 --> 13:15.080
An accident?
Knowing what we know now...
13:15.200 --> 13:22.120
Engineers and labourers working on the
pipeline project may have more information.
13:25.160 --> 13:28.520
See how much water I need
for the fish?
13:28.640 --> 13:31.680
This won\'t do.
I\'ll have to wash them again.
13:34.720 --> 13:39.160
The whole day long.
I clean fish even in my sleep.
13:39.280 --> 13:43.960
Yanna\'s family has been working
in the fish market for generations.
13:49.600 --> 13:55.160
Right, that\'s it.
You can deliver the fish later.
13:55.280 --> 14:00.480
Thank you very much.
-All the best, have a good evening.
14:00.600 --> 14:03.000
The fish market is gossip central.
14:03.120 --> 14:06.760
By now, she has heard
every possible sabotage theory.
14:14.000 --> 14:19.320
She has a pretty good idea of who stands
to gain from a broken pipeline.
14:20.160 --> 14:25.160
But also, who ends up
on the receiving end.
14:35.960 --> 14:41.720
My mother had to pay 200 euros to
the water company. She can\'t afford that.
14:41.840 --> 14:49.240
Her monthly pension is 350 euros. She
can\'t afford 200, but that\'s what it costs.
14:49.360 --> 14:52.480
The pipeline was connected, end of story.
14:52.600 --> 14:56.120
Why cause harm?
14:56.240 --> 14:58.320
Who are you wronging?
15:00.960 --> 15:06.720
Maybe it was personal,
maybe it was about money.
15:06.840 --> 15:10.880
But who have they harmed
with their actions?
15:11.960 --> 15:16.480
Shame on the perpetrators.
They have harmed us all.
15:16.600 --> 15:19.120
Every single person here on Aegina.
15:19.240 --> 15:23.520
The only people getting hit
are the regular folk.
15:23.640 --> 15:28.240
It\'s a fact. It\'s always the poor people
who end up paying the bill.
15:28.360 --> 15:30.120
That\'s just not right.
15:31.440 --> 15:34.040
Everyone who sold water...
15:34.160 --> 15:40.600
the owners of the water tankers
and wells...
15:40.720 --> 15:45.000
they all had a job which they now lost.
15:46.200 --> 15:48.480
Maybe it was them, maybe not.
15:48.600 --> 15:52.720
Those supplying or hauling the water.
15:52.840 --> 15:57.280
There were wells.
15:57.400 --> 16:03.480
The people working there,
the sailors shipping the water.
16:03.600 --> 16:11.120
There were many people involved,
maybe a hundred. All out of work.
16:13.480 --> 16:16.480
Yes, everyone was happy
with the pipeline...
16:16.600 --> 16:20.760
apart from those
who saw their earnings disappear.
16:20.880 --> 16:26.040
For example, if you and your brother
had built a well for selling water...
16:26.160 --> 16:28.160
and filling up your hotel pool.
16:33.120 --> 16:39.680
If you\'re hot,
you can cool off in there.
16:39.800 --> 16:44.560
That well is no longer
of any use to them.
16:44.680 --> 16:49.520
Do they dare to share their thoughts
on the attack on the pipeline?
16:55.400 --> 16:59.640
So as soon as the pipeline was up
and running...
16:59.760 --> 17:04.000
you were effectively out of business.
17:04.120 --> 17:07.320
Didn\'t that make you angry?
17:07.440 --> 17:11.360
Of course not.
-Why should we be angry?
17:11.480 --> 17:17.480
You only get paid for the work you do.
Why get angry? There is no problem.
17:17.600 --> 17:22.920
You lost your revenue.
-It was only a day\'s wage.
17:23.040 --> 17:27.600
Why are you so interested in our well?
17:27.720 --> 17:29.960
I\'ve had enough of this.
17:30.080 --> 17:33.280
We\'re making a documentary about water.
17:33.400 --> 17:37.960
It\'s been six years.
Why bring it up?
17:38.080 --> 17:42.240
We want to show
that there was a problem on Aegina.
17:42.360 --> 17:45.680
These are the facts,
we have nothing to hide.
17:45.800 --> 17:49.040
Why was there a problem?
17:49.160 --> 17:52.760
We had the wells.
-And the boat was coming.
17:52.880 --> 17:55.120
That\'s enough.
17:55.240 --> 17:56.920
Can we stop?
-Yes.
17:57.040 --> 18:01.320
We\'re very busy.
-I understand. Okay.
18:01.440 --> 18:06.680
I\'m sorry. I understand
that you\'re sick and tired of it.
18:06.800 --> 18:08.440
We have learned a lot.
18:08.560 --> 18:14.640
There\'s no point in talking about
the water now. It\'s been ten years.
18:15.920 --> 18:21.440
Well... It wasn\'t that long ago
since they stopped selling water.
18:21.560 --> 18:25.880
Not ten, not six.
No, two years at the very most.
18:26.000 --> 18:31.920
I think they are so hot-tempered
because people with wells...
18:32.040 --> 18:36.520
are now suspected of having
something to do with the attacks.
18:41.640 --> 18:45.600
And the brothers are not the only ones
on the suspect list.
18:45.720 --> 18:53.160
In fact, it\'s an extensive list containing
sellers of bottled water, fishermen...
19:00.920 --> 19:05.160
And so-called \'water carriers\'...
19:05.280 --> 19:11.280
who came from the mainland in their boats
to sell their overpriced drinking water.
19:12.320 --> 19:19.960
This pipeline once supplied water tankers
with drinking water destined for Aegina.
19:20.080 --> 19:27.160
Ever since Aegina got its own pipeline,
this one is now redundant.
19:30.800 --> 19:34.280
The water carriers manage
to stay out of sight.
19:34.400 --> 19:39.280
Unless it\'s a water carrier
who never sets foot on our island.
19:39.400 --> 19:43.880
Will this water seller break the omertà
that reigns on the island?
19:44.000 --> 19:48.480
I know nothing about the sabotage
of the Aegina pipeline...
19:48.600 --> 19:53.560
and we haven\'t initiated any legal
proceedings to investigate it either.
19:53.680 --> 19:57.600
We\'re just trying to do our job
as best as we can.
20:00.720 --> 20:06.440
The more you know about this battle
over water, the harder it gets to...
20:06.560 --> 20:12.400
How shall I put it? Express yourself.
No matter how powerful your voice.
20:19.440 --> 20:22.440
The former deputy mayor,
we can call him Pagis...
20:22.560 --> 20:26.680
doesn\'t like to dwell on his clashes
with the water carriers.
20:34.560 --> 20:39.800
But his wife Despina
isn\'t buying into his evasive answers.
20:39.920 --> 20:43.320
After all,
she used to be a teacher here.
20:43.440 --> 20:48.360
Look, the water carriers...
20:48.480 --> 20:54.240
had a lot of power
because they had contracts...
20:54.360 --> 20:58.360
that quite often they didn\'t adhere to.
20:58.480 --> 21:04.200
Whenever we were a bit late
paying them...
21:04.320 --> 21:06.960
they would threaten us.
21:09.240 --> 21:13.880
If he had told me right away
what had happened...
21:14.000 --> 21:19.040
I don\'t know what I would have done.
But Pagis didn\'t tell me until much later.
21:19.160 --> 21:21.520
It was no laughing matter.
21:22.400 --> 21:28.640
Why were you scared?
-His life and his health were at risk.
21:28.760 --> 21:34.120
My health.
Because they threatened me.
21:34.240 --> 21:38.160
I was scared...
21:38.280 --> 21:42.640
because he had a row with the guy
watching over the tanks, the official...
21:42.760 --> 21:44.920
and they had almost come to blows.
21:45.040 --> 21:47.680
Stop talking.
21:47.800 --> 21:51.440
He kicked me out
and told me it was their territory.
21:51.560 --> 21:54.520
He said:
We have defeated the deputy mayor.
21:54.640 --> 21:58.840
They almost came to blows.
22:04.800 --> 22:06.840
You be quiet now.
22:08.160 --> 22:11.200
What can you tell us about it?
22:11.320 --> 22:17.320
We had heard these rumours
that some employees...
22:17.440 --> 22:21.600
and officials had received gifts.
22:21.720 --> 22:27.120
Of course, receiving a gift is not stealing.
They also received cars as gifts.
22:27.240 --> 22:30.720
Big Jeeps.
22:30.840 --> 22:33.440
And a Rolex?
22:33.560 --> 22:39.320
I don\'t want to hear another word from you.
22:44.640 --> 22:49.000
Let\'s not argue.
We\'re done.
22:49.560 --> 22:52.160
Why did you have to bring up that Rolex?
22:55.360 --> 22:59.880
What\'s done is done.
23:00.000 --> 23:05.000
I\'m not allowed to say that some people
built houses in the past.
23:05.120 --> 23:06.880
I told you to be quiet.
23:07.000 --> 23:11.440
Are you scared?
-Of course I\'m scared.
23:15.520 --> 23:20.000
There was this guy in Glyfada
with a weapon.
23:21.200 --> 23:26.680
That\'s it.
-I don\'t know much about this.
23:26.800 --> 23:28.280
That\'s it.
23:33.080 --> 23:36.320
Why is this such a sensitive topic?
23:36.440 --> 23:41.480
I don\'t want to be reminded
of what I\'ve been through.
23:41.600 --> 23:46.560
I care about the future,
not the past.
23:46.680 --> 23:51.280
Hearing about the cunningness
of those water carriers...
23:51.400 --> 23:55.760
does make you wonder: Would they go
so far as to enlist trained divers...
23:55.880 --> 24:03.080
to attach explosives to the pipeline in order
to maintain control over the drinking water?
24:03.200 --> 24:08.440
You\'d think that for the deputy mayor,
the water carriers are the main suspects.
24:09.560 --> 24:11.920
I don\'t think it was them.
24:13.160 --> 24:15.480
I think it was a resident.
24:18.520 --> 24:20.320
The fishermen.
24:20.440 --> 24:21.920
The fishermen?
24:22.040 --> 24:29.520
Yes. The pipeline could have had a
negative impact on the fishery, for example.
24:31.520 --> 24:37.280
The noise, the pipeline on the seabed,
it\'s bad for the fish.
24:37.400 --> 24:41.120
Maybe the catch decreased.
24:43.240 --> 24:48.560
Is he afraid to accuse the water carriers?
In public, at least?
24:48.680 --> 24:51.080
Especially now his wife isn\'t here.
24:51.200 --> 24:53.080
Do you have Chios beer?
-No.
24:53.200 --> 24:57.440
Which beers do you have?
-Alfa, Vergina, Mythos.
24:57.560 --> 24:58.960
I\'ll have an Alfa.
24:59.080 --> 25:02.120
Or was it really the fishermen?
25:05.480 --> 25:07.000
Maybe it was Manolis...
25:07.120 --> 25:11.400
who is seriously annoyed
by the clatterer who is back yet again.
25:16.800 --> 25:20.760
We heard that the fishermen objected
to a pipeline.
25:20.880 --> 25:25.680
That\'s not true.
Whoever said that is a liar.
25:25.800 --> 25:31.760
The fishermen wanted the water
and everyone here agreed.
25:31.880 --> 25:34.400
Because water is a necessity.
25:34.520 --> 25:36.800
The person who did this was...
25:36.920 --> 25:42.320
I won\'t mention his name,
but he was a water carrier.
25:44.320 --> 25:48.720
It wasn\'t a problem for us.
And whoever says otherwise, is wrong.
25:49.600 --> 25:55.280
We only have a problem with the dolphins.
They tear up our nets.
26:19.280 --> 26:26.640
Have you heard whether the owners
of large fishing boats...
26:26.760 --> 26:30.560
opposed the construction
of the pipeline?
26:32.200 --> 26:37.600
Most fishermen believed
that the pipeline would never materialize.
26:37.720 --> 26:43.120
I guess they weren\'t prepared for it.
It took them by surprise.
26:43.240 --> 26:48.000
Now, there\'s nothing they can do.
It\'s a done deal.
26:48.120 --> 26:54.440
Because of the pipeline,
they can no longer fish like they used to.
26:54.560 --> 27:00.040
So their fuel costs will double or triple.
27:00.160 --> 27:04.520
Still, I don\'t think the fishermen
were behind the attack.
27:04.640 --> 27:10.400
They lack the resources
for an underwater explosion.
27:11.160 --> 27:13.880
It\'s something the mafia would do.
27:14.000 --> 27:19.880
You need special skills for it...
27:20.000 --> 27:24.480
and you need to know certain people.
Not everyone can do this.
27:25.240 --> 27:27.480
So it was most likely done by the mafia.
27:38.920 --> 27:44.360
The fate of the people is now in the hands
of the port police commander.
27:45.200 --> 27:48.360
Can he put an end
to the silence on this island?
27:52.200 --> 27:57.160
The port authority
launched an investigation...
27:57.280 --> 28:00.840
but I have no details
of the preliminary investigation.
28:00.960 --> 28:02.480
Why not?
28:03.400 --> 28:06.960
It\'s been confidentially filed
with the public prosecutor.
28:07.080 --> 28:11.000
You don\'t have anyone in mind?
-The attackers are unknown.
28:21.200 --> 28:24.480
Who do you think is responsible?
28:24.600 --> 28:27.800
That\'s crystal clear.
28:27.920 --> 28:32.480
Those who benefit from an uncompleted
pipeline: the water carriers.
28:32.600 --> 28:37.760
I\'m almost one hundred per cent sure.
But of course, nobody can prove it.
28:37.880 --> 28:40.960
What makes you think it\'s them?
28:41.080 --> 28:47.960
Imagine: a private company
has exclusive rights.
28:48.080 --> 28:50.800
For years and years.
28:50.920 --> 28:55.360
The profits made come at the expense
of the entire island.
28:56.360 --> 29:00.080
By the way, we knew one of those guys.
29:00.200 --> 29:03.440
We saw him often,
heard him talking on TV.
29:03.560 --> 29:09.280
He was always involved in corruption
and all sorts of shady dealings.
29:09.840 --> 29:15.480
We knew him,
but he didn\'t leave a good impression.
29:15.600 --> 29:19.520
He exuded absolute authority,
because he has the power.
29:19.640 --> 29:22.880
He has money and calls the shots.
29:23.000 --> 29:28.120
Should ordinary people
take on a gangster? It was difficult.
29:28.240 --> 29:33.080
The island, the police, the authorities,
they were all powerless.
29:33.200 --> 29:35.840
Who could stand up to them?
29:54.320 --> 29:59.560
The National Lottery, folks.
The National Lottery jackpot.
29:59.680 --> 30:03.280
That guy the fisherman was talking about?
30:03.400 --> 30:06.640
I\'ve seen him around,
acting like he owns the place.
30:06.760 --> 30:10.120
Journalists thought
they could interview him...
30:10.240 --> 30:13.840
but the guy has other things on his mind.
30:30.720 --> 30:37.200
Without fingerprints
it\'s almost impossible...
30:37.320 --> 30:43.680
to trace the origin of the explosives
and fuses.
30:43.800 --> 30:48.840
Our only chance of finding
the perpetrator...
30:48.960 --> 30:54.240
is if anyone involved in this operation
starts talking.
30:56.040 --> 31:01.280
It happened at sea
and the sea hides everything.
31:05.280 --> 31:09.840
All we can do is wait for a confession.
31:11.520 --> 31:17.040
In the meantime, a blanket of concrete
will protect our pipeline.
31:19.720 --> 31:27.640
Hoist, hoist.
31:39.080 --> 31:41.280
I see some here, in the middle.
31:42.360 --> 31:45.160
Everyone wanted it.
Even as children, we all said:
31:45.280 --> 31:48.600
\'When will the pipeline be built
with water from Athens?\'
31:48.720 --> 31:52.720
In terms of efficiency
it\'s certainly a good solution.
31:54.480 --> 32:00.880
At last, Aegina has access to clean
and affordable drinking water.
32:01.000 --> 32:03.760
It is tested regularly.
32:05.560 --> 32:09.040
So, all\'s well that ends well?
32:09.160 --> 32:13.480
I\'m not so sure about that,
because decades of scarcity...
32:13.600 --> 32:18.760
all those years that our island has been
sucked dry, have left their mark.
32:18.880 --> 32:21.800
We no longer trust each other
nor the water...
32:21.920 --> 32:26.840
and secretly,
we still prefer bottled water.
32:26.960 --> 32:31.240
I don\'t drink tap water.
Now that the network has been destroyed...
32:31.360 --> 32:35.920
you can\'t risk drinking water
from the new pipeline.
32:36.040 --> 32:39.480
So you don\'t drink water.
-Only bottled water.
32:42.480 --> 32:47.000
My mother doesn\'t drink tap water
and neither does my sister.
32:48.080 --> 32:54.040
The water is safe to drink.
There\'s no need for bottled water.
32:54.160 --> 32:57.480
But I also have bottled water.
32:57.600 --> 33:01.200
Just in case.
-Me too.
33:02.040 --> 33:07.280
No matter how safe our drinking water,
we are already cursed.
33:07.400 --> 33:10.480
We have been since the time of the gods.
33:11.800 --> 33:15.360
For the beautiful water nymph Aegina,
our namesake...
33:15.480 --> 33:18.240
was coveted by the supreme god Zeus.
33:19.840 --> 33:24.040
When there was a drought on the island,
Zeus would make it rain.
33:24.160 --> 33:28.400
But goddess Hera was jealous of Aegina
and poisoned...
33:28.520 --> 33:32.080
Oh wait, let Flora the Wise tell us.
33:32.200 --> 33:37.880
Hera was jealous of Aegina...
33:38.000 --> 33:40.840
and poisoned the rivers.
33:40.960 --> 33:45.440
The people drank the water and died.
33:46.600 --> 33:53.320
The explosion at sea also fits well with
our tradition of drought and toxic rivers.
33:54.440 --> 33:59.560
So as far as I\'m concerned,
the gods are behind it.
34:06.200 --> 34:10.960
In Baja California
an indigenous leader has been killed.
34:11.080 --> 34:15.280
He was killed near his home,
according to the authorities.
34:15.400 --> 34:17.880
One week ago, this activist stated...
34:18.000 --> 34:21.840
that the water of the region
is being hijacked by a brewery.
34:24.880 --> 34:30.080
Protesters were beaten until they bled...
34:30.200 --> 34:35.080
in another attempt to prevent
the company from taking our water.
