Nestled at the foothills of the Andes, on the edge of the Ecuadorian Amazon, Fruit Haven Ecovillage is a thriving permaculture fruit farm and sustainable community. Founded in 2016 by a group of young North Americans and Europeans, it emerged from a shared desire to create a home where they could fully embrace a vegan and raw-food lifestyle. What began with a single property has since expanded into a flourishing ecovillage spanning over 150 hectares across seven independent properties.
Co-directed by its members, Fruit Haven is dedicated to inspiring vegans to live sustainably by cultivating organic fruits and vegetables in harmony with nature.

00:00:08.174 --> 00:00:11.970
Some people think that the world,
society, is collapsing.
00:00:15.974 --> 00:00:19.019
We want to make a sanctuary,
00:00:19.310 --> 00:00:22.147
where anything
happening in the outside world,
00:00:22.230 --> 00:00:24.024
doesn\'t affect us much,
00:00:24.107 --> 00:00:27.986
because we’re here,
isolated from everything.
00:00:29.362 --> 00:00:33.950
It’s been a long time, I wanted to live like…
out of the city.
00:00:34.117 --> 00:00:36.453
I was totally in the system.
00:00:36.578 --> 00:00:39.247
For the first time in my life,
I really felt like:
00:00:39.414 --> 00:00:42.876
“Wow, I have my needs met,
have every need met,
00:00:43.043 --> 00:00:44.669
I’m lacking nothing.”
00:00:44.836 --> 00:00:46.713
The truth is that change
can be difficult,
00:00:46.796 --> 00:00:49.049
I mean,
solitude is not for everyone.
00:00:49.174 --> 00:00:52.927
But you eventually
end up loving solitude.
00:00:53.011 --> 00:00:54.804
It’s an incredible sense of calm.
00:01:56.241 --> 00:01:58.034
I’m 32 years old.
00:01:58.493 --> 00:02:01.704
I was born in the United States,
in the state of Connecticut,
00:02:01.746 --> 00:02:05.500
where it’s super cold,
and everything is super expensive.
00:02:05.834 --> 00:02:10.046
I studied at university,
I studied music, piano.
00:02:10.171 --> 00:02:12.966
And like many students,
00:02:13.049 --> 00:02:18.555
I was experiencing a lot of partying,
alcohol and marijuana, stuff like that.
00:02:18.680 --> 00:02:20.431
My health was deteriorating
00:02:20.557 --> 00:02:23.434
I had a lot of acne on my face,
00:02:23.476 --> 00:02:26.396
my energy was very low,
I was gaining weight.
00:02:26.688 --> 00:02:28.022
And I didn\'t feel good.
00:02:28.106 --> 00:02:30.650
So I started reading
and educating myself.
00:02:37.782 --> 00:02:43.746
I learned that a lot of processed food
from the modern diet,
00:02:43.830 --> 00:02:45.165
causes a lot of problems.
00:02:45.248 --> 00:02:48.459
So, I eliminated
those things from my diet.
00:02:48.543 --> 00:02:50.670
But I also became vegan,
00:02:50.712 --> 00:02:53.548
that is, I didn\'t eat meat
or animal products.
00:02:53.756 --> 00:02:58.303
I felt that the best diet for me
was a fruit-based diet.
00:03:06.686 --> 00:03:09.856
I was getting away
from the McDonald\'s life,
00:03:09.939 --> 00:03:13.026
and hamburgers,
and fried food.
00:03:13.151 --> 00:03:16.738
My life was changing,
and my friends\' lives weren\'t.
00:03:16.779 --> 00:03:18.364
So when this happens in life,
00:03:18.406 --> 00:03:21.367
you lose many friends,
naturally.
00:03:23.870 --> 00:03:26.414
I was getting tired of the cold,
and of Connecticut,
00:03:26.497 --> 00:03:30.335
and the lifestyle in the United States,
and everything.
00:03:31.085 --> 00:03:35.048
I decided that I wanted to live
in a tropical place,
00:03:35.298 --> 00:03:38.468
and grow fruit,
and start a community.
00:03:38.593 --> 00:03:42.055
So, I came to Ecuador
when I was 25 years old.
00:03:48.519 --> 00:03:50.271
We’re in Fruit Haven,
00:03:50.355 --> 00:03:52.857
an eco-village
in the east of Ecuador.
00:03:52.941 --> 00:03:54.984
It’s in the southeast of the country.
00:03:55.026 --> 00:03:59.072
We’re in the foothills
of the Andean mountains.
00:04:00.323 --> 00:04:01.908
In a very tropical place.
00:04:44.200 --> 00:04:47.412
We have more or less
650 hectares of land in total,
00:04:47.495 --> 00:04:51.708
but also, every year we grow
a little more, a little more.
00:04:59.007 --> 00:05:03.136
It’s a community of more or less
between 20 and 30 people.
00:05:03.219 --> 00:05:06.389
Every year, every month,
more and more people arrive.
00:05:14.397 --> 00:05:16.107
I had a different journey, I think.
00:05:16.357 --> 00:05:23.656
I started going in this…
direction away from the system, in a way,
00:05:23.740 --> 00:05:27.744
that I was already working from home,
for a few years, actually quite a while,
00:05:27.785 --> 00:05:31.748
I worked from home, and then
I wanted to start travelling and working,
00:05:31.789 --> 00:05:35.793
so I started to travel…
work like a digital nomad.
00:05:35.793 --> 00:05:41.257
And that was kind of the first step that I took
that was very unusual,
00:05:41.299 --> 00:05:43.134
you know, people never heard of it
00:05:43.217 --> 00:05:46.054
my friends were confused, like:
”Where are you, come home”.
00:05:46.679 --> 00:05:50.183
I’m like “No, I wanna see the world,
I’ve been home all these years, you know,
00:05:50.183 --> 00:05:53.186
just wanna go
and see something, and travelling.”
00:05:53.269 --> 00:05:58.358
And I think that helped me spiritually
to open my mind to other things,
00:05:58.441 --> 00:06:02.320
and to learn about new things,
and about different cultures,
00:06:02.403 --> 00:06:06.866
different languages, different peoples,
different ways, lifestyles, so
00:06:06.991 --> 00:06:11.079
I think that’s one of the reasons
that I was more open to this idea.
00:06:26.719 --> 00:06:33.101
Permaculture, I started learning a little bit
when I went in the direction of being fruitarian.
00:06:33.226 --> 00:06:36.270
I think it just became natural,
like, “Well, if I’m eating fruit,
00:06:36.270 --> 00:06:39.440
I should probably know about
how to grow it, how to pick it.”
00:06:39.565 --> 00:06:42.777
But it was very little at the time,
the first couple of years,
00:06:42.819 --> 00:06:44.320
I didn’t learn so much.
00:06:44.487 --> 00:06:48.866
Later, I thought about getting closer and
I started thinking about going to farm,
00:06:48.908 --> 00:06:53.454
so I went to work in Canada,
on a cherry farm, organic...
00:06:53.663 --> 00:06:56.457
But I didn’t learn too much
about growing it.
00:07:13.641 --> 00:07:17.353
I think that’s one of the reasons
that I was more open to this idea,
00:07:17.520 --> 00:07:20.523
of eating primarily fruit,
like...
00:07:20.648 --> 00:07:25.361
it became kind of intuition that
yeah, that’s how we should eat.
00:07:25.570 --> 00:07:27.989
We kind of came…
00:07:28.364 --> 00:07:34.245
Our relatives are apes, and they
eat primarily fruits and vegetables.
00:07:46.549 --> 00:07:48.593
And then I wanted
to find a community.
00:07:48.676 --> 00:07:51.721
So I searched
for raw vegan communities,
00:07:51.846 --> 00:07:55.641
and I read different pages, and the one
about Fruit Haven sounded interesting,
00:07:55.766 --> 00:07:59.020
so I applied
to be volunteer here,
00:07:59.270 --> 00:08:03.149
and then in December 2018,
that’s when I came.
00:08:03.357 --> 00:08:07.612
And yeah, I met Peter and
the other people that were here at the time,
00:08:07.653 --> 00:08:10.490
some volunteers came,
different people,
00:08:10.615 --> 00:08:16.037
I learned about how to plant trees
in this climate, as a tropical rainforest,
00:08:16.162 --> 00:08:18.539
and different permaculture techniques.
00:08:22.543 --> 00:08:26.047
The climate is mild,
you can grow the fruit all year,
00:08:26.130 --> 00:08:28.382
there’s always
something else in season,
00:08:28.424 --> 00:08:30.635
all year you can have
bananas, papayas,
00:08:30.676 --> 00:08:33.471
and then different seasons
throughout the year.
00:08:37.475 --> 00:08:40.311
And things grow really well here,
there’s a lot of water,
00:08:40.311 --> 00:08:43.689
a lot of sun,
and the temperature is stable.
00:08:44.065 --> 00:08:48.319
Those are the reasons that
I can stay here all year and be a frutarian.
00:10:02.810 --> 00:10:07.398
I was studying in college
to become a medical interpreter.
00:10:07.565 --> 00:10:11.402
And I had interned at hospitals,
and pharmacies,
00:10:11.694 --> 00:10:15.489
and I was on track
to get a career in medicine.
00:10:15.948 --> 00:10:18.993
But after a few months
of working in that type of a job,
00:10:19.076 --> 00:10:21.078
I quickly realized that
00:10:21.412 --> 00:10:24.582
I was experiencing a lot of
cognitive dissonance, like...
00:10:24.790 --> 00:10:27.627
That type of work
didn’t make sense to me anymore,
00:10:27.793 --> 00:10:29.170
because I realized that...
00:10:29.295 --> 00:10:33.466
people don’t get better in hospitals,
people don’t get cured,
00:10:33.633 --> 00:10:35.926
by that type of medical treatment.
00:10:36.135 --> 00:10:40.222
And instead, I was discovering that
the people who really cured themselves,
00:10:40.306 --> 00:10:44.352
from things like stage 4 cancer,
type 2 diabetes,
00:10:44.518 --> 00:10:47.271
they get better through
changing their lifestyle.
00:10:47.438 --> 00:10:50.316
They get better through
changing their diet.
00:11:00.076 --> 00:11:05.289
So the cognitive dissonance was so great
that I couldn’t work those jobs anymore.
00:11:05.331 --> 00:11:09.210
Instead I quit those jobs,
my family thought I was crazy.
00:11:09.377 --> 00:11:12.755
And I started to live
in intentional communities.
00:11:12.838 --> 00:11:15.424
And do permaculture,
learned how to grow my own food,
00:11:15.466 --> 00:11:18.636
as organically and safely
and healthy as possible,
00:11:18.719 --> 00:11:20.346
without a bunch of chemicals.
00:11:20.596 --> 00:11:25.101
And that whole process
really sent me down this rabbit hole,
00:11:25.226 --> 00:11:29.146
of eventually coming here
and starting my own off-grid homestead,
00:11:29.313 --> 00:11:32.149
and doing permaculture
on my own land here.
00:11:44.995 --> 00:11:48.040
When I first arrived at Fruit Haven,
00:11:48.207 --> 00:11:53.963
I just felt this overwhelming sense
of being held, of being cradled,
00:11:54.338 --> 00:11:55.923
by the jungle.
00:11:56.048 --> 00:12:00.469
I immediately felt like:
\"Yeah, this is home.\"
00:12:43.512 --> 00:12:47.391
So a typical day,
I wake up around sunrise,
00:12:47.516 --> 00:12:49.351
and I’ll work online
in the morning,
00:12:49.393 --> 00:12:53.564
I have a couple of online jobs
I do to sustain myself here,
00:12:54.064 --> 00:12:58.194
and I will eat fruit
and my salads,
00:12:58.319 --> 00:13:01.405
and I will also
work the land in the afternoon.
00:13:04.617 --> 00:13:07.453
And I have traveled around elsewhere,
00:13:07.536 --> 00:13:10.247
in the past five years
that I’ve been in Fruit Haven.
00:13:10.498 --> 00:13:14.835
But everywhere that I go,
I miss it here, I want to come back.
00:13:14.960 --> 00:13:17.254
And I haven’t felt that
with any other place.
00:14:05.010 --> 00:14:07.805
I’ve been vegan for 22 years,
00:14:07.888 --> 00:14:11.517
and a raw vegan
in the last 8 years.
00:14:11.809 --> 00:14:14.603
With some slip-offs.
00:14:14.854 --> 00:14:17.147
I became vegan because I want…
00:14:17.231 --> 00:14:22.653
I did it for the animals, actually,
because of ethical reasons,
00:14:23.737 --> 00:14:28.742
and then later I started doing it
for health reasons as well.
00:14:28.868 --> 00:14:31.287
Because it’s a prevention.
00:14:48.888 --> 00:14:53.350
I went gradually into this diet,
I felt very nice, actually.
00:14:53.434 --> 00:14:55.728
I didn’t have
any health issues, so
00:14:55.728 --> 00:14:59.356
I couldn’t see
the difference before and after,
00:14:59.940 --> 00:15:02.735
but I felt really well
with this diet,
00:15:02.860 --> 00:15:05.821
and with time, even better.
00:15:05.905 --> 00:15:08.657
I really enjoy this diet so much.
00:15:08.741 --> 00:15:12.328
It’s a lifestyle, actually,
it’s not just a diet for me.
00:15:12.494 --> 00:15:14.246
And I love it so much.
00:15:20.044 --> 00:15:25.174
For long time I was making recipes,
either cooked or raw, later.
00:15:25.341 --> 00:15:29.720
But it was private, you know,
just for family and for friends.
00:15:29.845 --> 00:15:31.472
But at some point,
I felt like…
00:15:31.513 --> 00:15:34.516
that I wanted to share the recipes
with other people.
00:15:34.600 --> 00:15:39.521
And, I mean,
this gave me a lot of joy, to share,
00:15:39.605 --> 00:15:41.982
when I see people enjoying
the food that I’m making,
00:15:41.982 --> 00:15:44.318
it’s really great for me.
00:15:48.989 --> 00:15:52.993
I think it’s important to have
a healthy diet,
00:15:53.243 --> 00:15:56.538
it’s very important,
and this kind of place helps a lot with that.
00:15:56.664 --> 00:16:00.709
But somebody needs to
have taken the decision to do it,
00:16:00.709 --> 00:16:02.795
because we see people sometimes,
00:16:02.920 --> 00:16:04.922
who “eat better” when they are in the city,
00:16:04.922 --> 00:16:07.716
and when they come here,
they eat the same food,
00:16:07.800 --> 00:16:10.511
they go to south side,
in the city, and…
00:16:10.761 --> 00:16:14.556
so it’s not like 100% that
when you go to the tropic,
00:16:14.556 --> 00:16:16.725
you’re gonna eat healthily.
00:16:16.892 --> 00:16:19.144
Of course
it’s a very important factor,
00:16:19.228 --> 00:16:22.356
and for the people who really want
to change their diet,
00:16:22.481 --> 00:16:24.817
this place here helps a lot.
00:16:32.199 --> 00:16:36.453
I am 25 years old,
I come from Colombia,
00:16:36.662 --> 00:16:41.750
specifically from the city of Palmira,
in the Department of Valle del Cauca.
00:16:43.335 --> 00:16:48.090
Before finding this place,
I’d never traveled to another country,
00:16:48.173 --> 00:16:50.718
in fact, I’d barely traveled
even within Colombia.
00:16:50.801 --> 00:16:54.221
I found out about this place
from a post on Instagram.
00:16:54.763 --> 00:16:58.600
I contacted them,
I sent them an email,
00:16:58.809 --> 00:17:02.521
and after a week or so,
they answered me,
00:17:02.646 --> 00:17:05.315
and they accepted me as a volunteer.
00:17:11.947 --> 00:17:16.118
When I got here, I knew
practically nothing about permaculture,
00:17:16.160 --> 00:17:20.539
but when you do the volunteer program,
you learn a lot.
00:17:27.796 --> 00:17:30.549
Pineapple cultivation here
is a bit difficult,
00:17:30.758 --> 00:17:35.137
so I set out on the task
of designing a...
00:17:35.429 --> 00:17:38.891
a fabric cover
that could protect the pineapples,
00:17:38.974 --> 00:17:41.727
to avoid diseases and worms.
00:17:42.186 --> 00:17:44.730
I had to design something like this,
00:17:44.897 --> 00:17:46.607
and it seems that it’s worked,
00:17:46.732 --> 00:17:50.360
because I\'ve had pretty good,
healthy pineapples.
00:17:55.949 --> 00:17:57.910
I changed my diet in Colombia.
00:17:57.993 --> 00:18:01.830
In Colombia I was already following
a more or less fruitarian diet for about two years.
00:18:02.289 --> 00:18:06.585
And in fact, I’d changed my diet
because I had been quite ill,
00:18:06.710 --> 00:18:10.881
and followed this fruitarian diet,
for about two years, in Colombia,
00:18:11.048 --> 00:18:15.677
so... I was looking for
different ways to heal myself.
00:18:15.803 --> 00:18:20.224
And that was one of the reasons
I was looking for another place too,
00:18:20.474 --> 00:18:25.687
and when I saw their Instagram account
I was like, \"Wow, this is my place.\"
00:18:25.854 --> 00:18:29.024
So I did everything I could
to get here.
00:19:12.860 --> 00:19:14.611
The transformation was incredible.
00:19:14.736 --> 00:19:16.738
I used to be the person
who went to the gym,
00:19:16.780 --> 00:19:19.992
and drank a lot of protein shakes,
00:19:20.117 --> 00:19:25.247
and I was… bigger,
with more muscles,
00:19:25.581 --> 00:19:30.294
and I changed a lot, my friends were like:
“What’s going on with you”,
00:19:30.419 --> 00:19:32.379
“You\'re sick”,
or something like that.
00:19:32.462 --> 00:19:37.217
And well, before that I looked…
healthy,
00:19:37.467 --> 00:19:42.681
on the outside, my physique,
but I was dying inside.
00:19:42.806 --> 00:19:49.104
So, I chose to be well inside
and not have good looks,
00:19:49.271 --> 00:19:52.024
but to live happily,
feeling good,
00:19:53.192 --> 00:19:56.778
and to reach old age
without any type of illness,
00:19:56.945 --> 00:19:59.823
rather than reaching old age
with diabetes, cancer,
00:19:59.990 --> 00:20:03.285
or some kind of illness,
taking pills,
00:20:03.493 --> 00:20:05.621
I don\'t want that for my life
00:20:41.448 --> 00:20:43.325
I think humans at large
00:20:43.408 --> 00:20:46.370
desperately need to learn
how to live more sustainably.
00:20:46.662 --> 00:20:51.583
That means we need to live more
in close, intimate connection with the Earth.
00:20:54.920 --> 00:20:57.297
Here in the forest
there are very important things,
00:20:57.381 --> 00:20:58.966
the food is growing,
00:20:58.966 --> 00:21:02.761
all the friends who live here
have what they need.
00:21:03.011 --> 00:21:06.306
We want to live in the woods,
with cabins, with fruit,
00:21:06.390 --> 00:21:09.977
we want to grow our own food,
without chemicals.
00:21:12.980 --> 00:21:15.482
It’s like a school,
we learn a lot.
00:21:15.565 --> 00:21:18.068
You’re getting to
know yourself more,
00:21:18.151 --> 00:21:22.030
and you start
learning your limits.
00:21:25.826 --> 00:21:30.872
My dream is to have many varieties
of fruits to feed myself,
00:21:31.039 --> 00:21:34.626
to live in community,
share with other people,
00:21:35.002 --> 00:21:36.628
live in nature.
00:21:40.090 --> 00:21:43.885
Hopefully people consider
this is a good way of life.
00:21:44.428 --> 00:21:45.846
I remember some people think:
00:21:45.887 --> 00:21:48.515
\"Oh, is it possible
for the whole world to live like this?”
00:21:48.640 --> 00:21:49.558
And I think it is.
