While George Bush strains to win their trust, Religious Right leaders turn to a new crusade: building a true grassroots power structure from the ashes of the Robertson campaign. The fruit of their efforts, the Christian Coalition, is now one of the most politically adept membership organizations ever. Yet many inside the movement question if, in gaining power in the secular world, conservative Christians have lost their evangelical soul. This final episode lays bare the struggle for the future of the Religious Right--and of America.

Additional funding was provided
by following.

00:00:41.144 --> 00:00:57.611 align:middle line:90%
[SINGING]
00:00:57.611 --> 00:01:17.100 align:middle line:90%
[MUSIC PLAYING]
00:01:17.100 --> 00:01:19.590 align:middle line:84%
There are some who would say
that your decision to enter
00:01:19.590 --> 00:01:23.250 align:middle line:84%
politics may not have been
the right thing.
00:01:23.250 --> 00:01:25.420 align:middle line:84%
Well, everybody\'s entitled
to their own opinions.
00:01:25.420 --> 00:01:28.570 align:middle line:90%
And it\'s a subjective thing.
00:01:28.570 --> 00:01:32.240 align:middle line:84%
And many times, you don\'t
know what\'s right until
00:01:32.240 --> 00:01:34.350 align:middle line:90%
years down the road.
00:01:34.350 --> 00:01:36.200 align:middle line:90%
Jesus was the son of God.
00:01:36.200 --> 00:01:40.030 align:middle line:84%
He was the Messiah,
but he got killed.
00:01:40.030 --> 00:01:41.510 align:middle line:84%
He hung on a cross like
a common criminal.
00:01:41.510 --> 00:01:43.640 align:middle line:84%
Everybody left him, and he was
out there, and everybody made
00:01:43.640 --> 00:01:46.870 align:middle line:84%
fun of him, and the leaders
laughed at him.
00:01:46.870 --> 00:01:48.560 align:middle line:90%
And he just hung there.
00:01:48.560 --> 00:01:50.850 align:middle line:84%
And if he hadn\'t risen
from the grave, it
00:01:50.850 --> 00:01:53.050 align:middle line:90%
would\'ve been a problem.
00:01:53.050 --> 00:01:55.560 align:middle line:84%
You can\'t believe the apathy
there is in this country.
00:01:55.560 --> 00:02:01.350 align:middle line:84%
It is unreal how few people are
willing to participate in
00:02:01.350 --> 00:02:05.300 align:middle line:84%
the process of the political
parties in our country.
00:02:05.300 --> 00:02:08.430 align:middle line:84%
Well, if we care about this
country, we\'ll get involved.
00:02:08.430 --> 00:02:11.740 align:middle line:90%
00:02:11.740 --> 00:02:17.210 align:middle line:84%
I had a call from my Louisiana
state chairman who said, Pat,
00:02:17.210 --> 00:02:21.350 align:middle line:84%
all that you have done is going
to go to naught unless
00:02:21.350 --> 00:02:23.610 align:middle line:84%
you provide leadership right
now for these people.
00:02:23.610 --> 00:02:26.150 align:middle line:84%
There are hundreds of thousands
of people who you
00:02:26.150 --> 00:02:29.390 align:middle line:84%
have brought into politics for
the first time in their lives.
00:02:29.390 --> 00:02:30.900 align:middle line:84%
And they\'re looking
for leadership.
00:02:30.900 --> 00:02:33.696 align:middle line:90%
You\'ve got to do something.
00:02:33.696 --> 00:02:37.280 align:middle line:84%
I remember one night very
early on just rummaging
00:02:37.280 --> 00:02:40.670 align:middle line:84%
through what remained of the
presidential campaign.
00:02:40.670 --> 00:02:44.160 align:middle line:84%
A few beat up old file
cabinets, a bunch of
00:02:44.160 --> 00:02:47.420 align:middle line:84%
inflatable elephants left over
from some rally that had been
00:02:47.420 --> 00:02:51.030 align:middle line:84%
held somewhere, a bunch of old
Robertson or Americans for
00:02:51.030 --> 00:02:53.050 align:middle line:90%
Robertson bumper stickers--
00:02:53.050 --> 00:02:56.500 align:middle line:84%
just the after birth of a
presidential campaign, and a
00:02:56.500 --> 00:02:57.580 align:middle line:90%
losing one at that.
00:02:57.580 --> 00:03:01.390 align:middle line:84%
So it was not a very
optimistic scene.
00:03:01.390 --> 00:03:04.480 align:middle line:84%
And I remember Pat and I just
rummaging through all that and
00:03:04.480 --> 00:03:06.800 align:middle line:90%
ruminating on it.
00:03:06.800 --> 00:03:10.440 align:middle line:84%
And it occurred to me at that
moment that he was the only
00:03:10.440 --> 00:03:14.330 align:middle line:84%
conservative evangelical in the
20th century to run for
00:03:14.330 --> 00:03:16.260 align:middle line:84%
president of the
United States.
00:03:16.260 --> 00:03:21.610 align:middle line:84%
And by going 12 rounds with Lee
Atwater and Charlie Black
00:03:21.610 --> 00:03:27.030 align:middle line:84%
and Jim Baker and Ed Rawlings,
he really got a PhD in the
00:03:27.030 --> 00:03:28.550 align:middle line:84%
political school
of hard knocks.
00:03:28.550 --> 00:03:33.920 align:middle line:84%
He learned a lot about how this
system works that most
00:03:33.920 --> 00:03:35.670 align:middle line:84%
religious conservative
and pro-family
00:03:35.670 --> 00:03:39.800 align:middle line:90%
leaders have never had.
00:03:39.800 --> 00:03:43.370 align:middle line:84%
Ralph Reed agreed to
come and serve.
00:03:43.370 --> 00:03:47.490 align:middle line:84%
And we were in the process
of closing down
00:03:47.490 --> 00:03:49.325 align:middle line:90%
the campaign office.
00:03:49.325 --> 00:03:51.940 align:middle line:84%
And in those same facilities,
we started
00:03:51.940 --> 00:03:53.000 align:middle line:90%
the Christian Coalition.
00:03:53.000 --> 00:03:54.440 align:middle line:90%
He knew I could organize.
00:03:54.440 --> 00:03:57.800 align:middle line:84%
He knew that if we decided to
try to get something done,
00:03:57.800 --> 00:04:00.390 align:middle line:84%
that I would probably be able
to make that happen.
00:04:00.390 --> 00:04:04.390 align:middle line:84%
I think a lot of us who came
out of the student movement
00:04:04.390 --> 00:04:08.640 align:middle line:84%
watched the left in the \'60s
in terms of the use of
00:04:08.640 --> 00:04:12.290 align:middle line:84%
demonstrations, the use
of street theater.
00:04:12.290 --> 00:04:14.920 align:middle line:84%
Ralph Reed did a lot of this
with us in College
00:04:14.920 --> 00:04:15.520 align:middle line:90%
Republicans.
00:04:15.520 --> 00:04:19.880 align:middle line:84%
Ralph put together the How to
Build, Design, and Burn a
00:04:19.880 --> 00:04:22.940 align:middle line:84%
Soviet Flag kit, which was
mailed out throughout the
00:04:22.940 --> 00:04:24.760 align:middle line:90%
College Republicans.
00:04:24.760 --> 00:04:26.860 align:middle line:84%
Because everybody always forgot
which way the hammer
00:04:26.860 --> 00:04:27.580 align:middle line:90%
and sickle go.
00:04:27.580 --> 00:04:35.100 align:middle line:90%
[CROWD CHANTING]
00:04:35.100 --> 00:04:36.310 align:middle line:90%
Keep it short [INAUDIBLE].
00:04:36.310 --> 00:04:37.330 align:middle line:90%
OK, good morning.
00:04:37.330 --> 00:04:38.440 align:middle line:90%
My name is Ralph Reed.
00:04:38.440 --> 00:04:41.330 align:middle line:84%
I\'m the executive director
of Students for America.
00:04:41.330 --> 00:04:44.480 align:middle line:84%
What you are witnessing this
morning is a symbolic
00:04:44.480 --> 00:04:48.120 align:middle line:84%
concentration camp, an
internment camp, built along
00:04:48.120 --> 00:04:50.420 align:middle line:84%
the lines of those that are in
Nicaragua and have been in
00:04:50.420 --> 00:04:52.570 align:middle line:84%
Nicaragua since the Sandinista
communist
00:04:52.570 --> 00:04:54.830 align:middle line:90%
overthrow in that country.
00:04:54.830 --> 00:04:57.940 align:middle line:84%
It was after he had been a
national College Republican
00:04:57.940 --> 00:05:01.820 align:middle line:84%
leader that he had a religious
conversion, and stopped
00:05:01.820 --> 00:05:07.530 align:middle line:84%
drinking, and stopped cussing,
and proceeded to make every
00:05:07.530 --> 00:05:10.400 align:middle line:84%
effort to walk on the
straight and narrow.
00:05:10.400 --> 00:05:12.370 align:middle line:84%
So we are grateful for
all of your efforts.
00:05:12.370 --> 00:05:16.370 align:middle line:84%
He learned partisan politics,
he learned Capitol Hill, he
00:05:16.370 --> 00:05:19.250 align:middle line:84%
understood coalitions, he
understands the secular
00:05:19.250 --> 00:05:21.470 align:middle line:84%
motivations of much
of the party and
00:05:21.470 --> 00:05:23.150 align:middle line:90%
has respect for that.
00:05:23.150 --> 00:05:27.240 align:middle line:84%
And I think that\'s one of the
reasons that he so frustrates
00:05:27.240 --> 00:05:30.400 align:middle line:84%
his enemies who would like to
pigeonhole him and say, oh,
00:05:30.400 --> 00:05:32.470 align:middle line:84%
Ralph Reed is a religious
conservative.
00:05:32.470 --> 00:05:34.770 align:middle line:84%
I know what that means-- and
then, they draw this
00:05:34.770 --> 00:05:36.110 align:middle line:90%
caricature of Ralph.
00:05:36.110 --> 00:05:39.090 align:middle line:84%
I always felt, just as a matter
of political strategy,
00:05:39.090 --> 00:05:40.760 align:middle line:84%
that the religious conservative
movement had
00:05:40.760 --> 00:05:42.540 align:middle line:90%
always gotten it backwards.
00:05:42.540 --> 00:05:47.060 align:middle line:84%
It always tried to leapfrog over
the preliminary steps to
00:05:47.060 --> 00:05:50.920 align:middle line:84%
political influence by, in one
long bomb at the end of the
00:05:50.920 --> 00:05:52.630 align:middle line:84%
game, try and win
the White House.
00:05:52.630 --> 00:05:58.670 align:middle line:84%
He was very disillusioned with
Washington, with any sense of
00:05:58.670 --> 00:06:01.090 align:middle line:84%
running a revolution
out of this city.
00:06:01.090 --> 00:06:04.440 align:middle line:84%
And he was quite correct in
understanding that you had to
00:06:04.440 --> 00:06:07.100 align:middle line:84%
organize at the state level
and at the local level in
00:06:07.100 --> 00:06:10.640 align:middle line:84%
order to come back into
Washington with power to
00:06:10.640 --> 00:06:13.490 align:middle line:90%
overwhelm the establishment.
00:06:13.490 --> 00:06:14.940 align:middle line:90%
So help me God.
00:06:14.940 --> 00:06:18.970 align:middle line:84%
Reed\'s decision to organize the
grassroots was reinforced
00:06:18.970 --> 00:06:22.220 align:middle line:84%
by a growing suspicion among
evangelicals that the Bush
00:06:22.220 --> 00:06:25.485 align:middle line:84%
administration did not share
their political priorities.
00:06:25.485 --> 00:06:29.420 align:middle line:90%
00:06:29.420 --> 00:06:31.670 align:middle line:84%
Evangelicals criticize
the president.
00:06:31.670 --> 00:06:33.920 align:middle line:90%
This is Family News In Focus.
00:06:33.920 --> 00:06:37.100 align:middle line:84%
Now George Bush is in danger
of losing his title as the
00:06:37.100 --> 00:06:40.420 align:middle line:84%
traditional values President
for inviting homosexual
00:06:40.420 --> 00:06:41.870 align:middle line:90%
activists to the White House.
00:06:41.870 --> 00:06:46.180 align:middle line:84%
And so I was called in to help
put the fire out, which was my
00:06:46.180 --> 00:06:47.890 align:middle line:90%
job with conservative groups.
00:06:47.890 --> 00:06:51.672 align:middle line:84%
I can\'t say there was a moment
that I came to my boss and
00:06:51.672 --> 00:06:53.980 align:middle line:84%
there was a disconnect and he
couldn\'t understand-- well
00:06:53.980 --> 00:06:56.590 align:middle line:84%
that\'s evangelical, I
don\'t understand.
00:06:56.590 --> 00:06:58.430 align:middle line:90%
It\'s the other way around.
00:06:58.430 --> 00:07:02.660 align:middle line:84%
There was almost never a time in
my life that I took one of
00:07:02.660 --> 00:07:04.770 align:middle line:84%
these evangelical issues to
somebody in the staff where
00:07:04.770 --> 00:07:06.000 align:middle line:90%
there was a connect.
00:07:06.000 --> 00:07:08.590 align:middle line:84%
I\'m signing into law today
a measure to require the
00:07:08.590 --> 00:07:12.780 align:middle line:84%
Attorney General to collect as
much information as we can on
00:07:12.780 --> 00:07:19.900 align:middle line:84%
crimes motivated by religion,
race, ethnicity, or sexual
00:07:19.900 --> 00:07:21.230 align:middle line:90%
orientation.
00:07:21.230 --> 00:07:23.340 align:middle line:84%
People have said to us, weren\'t
you aware this was the
00:07:23.340 --> 00:07:26.240 align:middle line:84%
first time that gay and lesbian
organizations were
00:07:26.240 --> 00:07:27.420 align:middle line:90%
invited to the White House?
00:07:27.420 --> 00:07:29.190 align:middle line:90%
And the response was, no.
00:07:29.190 --> 00:07:32.260 align:middle line:84%
I mean, it was not something we
all walked around worrying
00:07:32.260 --> 00:07:34.686 align:middle line:84%
about-- have we invited any gay
or lesbian groups to the
00:07:34.686 --> 00:07:35.820 align:middle line:90%
White House these days?
00:07:35.820 --> 00:07:38.680 align:middle line:84%
This, remember, was a
hate crimes bill.
00:07:38.680 --> 00:07:42.680 align:middle line:84%
And the president\'s position
was, it would be hateful and
00:07:42.680 --> 00:07:47.220 align:middle line:84%
wrong not to invite someone
because of their
00:07:47.220 --> 00:07:48.590 align:middle line:90%
homosexuality.
00:07:48.590 --> 00:07:51.160 align:middle line:84%
Richard Land, executive director
of the Christian Life
00:07:51.160 --> 00:07:51.910 align:middle line:90%
Commission.
00:07:51.910 --> 00:07:58.610 align:middle line:84%
Quite simply, there\'s not a
political way to coalesce
00:07:58.610 --> 00:08:03.350 align:middle line:84%
evangelical support and
homosexual activist support
00:08:03.350 --> 00:08:04.600 align:middle line:90%
behind the same person.
00:08:04.600 --> 00:08:05.940 align:middle line:90%
My friends have [INAUDIBLE].
00:08:05.940 --> 00:08:08.820 align:middle line:84%
The last straw, however, didn\'t
come until the signing
00:08:08.820 --> 00:08:12.350 align:middle line:84%
of the Americans with
Disabilities Act.
00:08:12.350 --> 00:08:17.080 align:middle line:84%
We hold these truths to be self
evident that all men are
00:08:17.080 --> 00:08:21.470 align:middle line:84%
created equal, that they are
endowed by their creator with
00:08:21.470 --> 00:08:24.160 align:middle line:90%
certain unalienable rights.
00:08:24.160 --> 00:08:28.420 align:middle line:84%
At the end of this event, a
whole other set of flurries of
00:08:28.420 --> 00:08:32.200 align:middle line:84%
stories came that somehow the
White House had again invited
00:08:32.200 --> 00:08:35.870 align:middle line:84%
homosexuals and lesbians into
the White House for the
00:08:35.870 --> 00:08:37.299 align:middle line:90%
purpose of a bill signing.
00:08:37.299 --> 00:08:39.623 align:middle line:84%
Well, the reality was
we had not done so.
00:08:39.623 --> 00:08:44.410 align:middle line:84%
But somehow, surprise upon
surprise, among 3,300 people
00:08:44.410 --> 00:08:46.390 align:middle line:84%
who walked in that gate,
some of them happened
00:08:46.390 --> 00:08:48.685 align:middle line:90%
to be gay or lesbian.
00:08:48.685 --> 00:08:52.120 align:middle line:84%
And apparently, at least in the
media, we denied that we
00:08:52.120 --> 00:08:53.370 align:middle line:90%
had invited them.
00:08:53.370 --> 00:08:56.280 align:middle line:84%
And then, there were some
pictures or something with
00:08:56.280 --> 00:08:58.540 align:middle line:84%
some kids out on the lawn
with act-up t-shirts.
00:08:58.540 --> 00:09:02.440 align:middle line:84%
And so it appeared that
we had been deceptive.
00:09:02.440 --> 00:09:05.790 align:middle line:84%
Very quickly, Doug worked the
scenario so that every
00:09:05.790 --> 00:09:07.760 align:middle line:84%
conservative religious, or
right wing religious,
00:09:07.760 --> 00:09:10.140 align:middle line:84%
organization in the United
States knew that, quote,
00:09:10.140 --> 00:09:12.550 align:middle line:84%
\"There were some people who were
gay and lesbian on the
00:09:12.550 --> 00:09:14.460 align:middle line:90%
lawn with 3,300 other people.\"
00:09:14.460 --> 00:09:15.740 align:middle line:84%
And that was Governor
Sununu\'s last straw.
00:09:15.740 --> 00:09:18.550 align:middle line:84%
He said, that\'s enough,
and he replaced Doug.
00:09:18.550 --> 00:09:21.600 align:middle line:84%
CBN News reported Tuesday
allegations that some
00:09:21.600 --> 00:09:24.280 align:middle line:84%
Christian White House staffers
have been fired, pressured,
00:09:24.280 --> 00:09:27.190 align:middle line:84%
asked to find other work,
or have left their jobs.
00:09:27.190 --> 00:09:30.710 align:middle line:84%
Tuesday\'s CBN report revealed
this memo asking that a list
00:09:30.710 --> 00:09:33.200 align:middle line:84%
of evangelical appointments
be drawn up.
00:09:33.200 --> 00:09:35.890 align:middle line:84%
Sources say the list was never
compiled, because enough
00:09:35.890 --> 00:09:38.110 align:middle line:84%
Christian White House staffers
banded together
00:09:38.110 --> 00:09:40.110 align:middle line:90%
and refused to cooperate.
00:09:40.110 --> 00:09:46.510 align:middle line:84%
There accumulated a bitterness
and a lack of trust towards
00:09:46.510 --> 00:09:49.950 align:middle line:84%
the Bush administration that
I believed we could
00:09:49.950 --> 00:09:54.990 align:middle line:90%
solve before \'92.
00:09:54.990 --> 00:09:57.075 align:middle line:84%
But we didn\'t get a chance
to solve it.
00:09:57.075 --> 00:09:59.160 align:middle line:90%
Things got worse, not better.
00:09:59.160 --> 00:10:03.120 align:middle line:84%
The days of kowtowing to the
Republican presidents
00:10:03.120 --> 00:10:04.100 align:middle line:90%
had come to an end.
00:10:04.100 --> 00:10:08.900 align:middle line:84%
And it was now time to build a
permanent separate grassroots
00:10:08.900 --> 00:10:11.610 align:middle line:84%
structure that would speak for
them, and would be a force
00:10:11.610 --> 00:10:14.810 align:middle line:90%
unto its own.
00:10:14.810 --> 00:10:18.370 align:middle line:84%
The mission of the Christian
Coalition is simple--
00:10:18.370 --> 00:10:22.410 align:middle line:84%
to mobilize Christians one
precinct at a time, one
00:10:22.410 --> 00:10:27.910 align:middle line:84%
community at a time, one state
at a time, until once again we
00:10:27.910 --> 00:10:32.450 align:middle line:84%
are the head and not the tail,
and at the top rather than the
00:10:32.450 --> 00:10:35.210 align:middle line:84%
bottom, of our political
system.
00:10:35.210 --> 00:10:40.060 align:middle line:84%
It\'s time to say loud and
clear, Christians are
00:10:40.060 --> 00:10:42.400 align:middle line:90%
Americans, too.
00:10:42.400 --> 00:10:43.930 align:middle line:84%
The question is how
we accomplish it.
00:10:43.930 --> 00:10:46.640 align:middle line:84%
And that\'s where we get to
this five-fold strategy.
00:10:46.640 --> 00:10:49.680 align:middle line:84%
It\'s a five-fold strategy that,
if we execute this in
00:10:49.680 --> 00:10:53.830 align:middle line:84%
the coming 10 years, we will be
the most powerful political
00:10:53.830 --> 00:10:55.420 align:middle line:90%
force in American politics.
00:10:55.420 --> 00:10:59.210 align:middle line:84%
We will develop the ability to
elect majorities in the United
00:10:59.210 --> 00:11:02.500 align:middle line:84%
States Congress, and the
legislatures in at least 30
00:11:02.500 --> 00:11:06.710 align:middle line:84%
states, as well as the city
councils, the city school
00:11:06.710 --> 00:11:09.530 align:middle line:84%
boards, and other
local bodies.
00:11:09.530 --> 00:11:13.050 align:middle line:84%
We will become a decisive voice
in at least one of the
00:11:13.050 --> 00:11:15.380 align:middle line:90%
two major political parties.
00:11:15.380 --> 00:11:18.260 align:middle line:84%
If you are going to be involved
in the political
00:11:18.260 --> 00:11:24.780 align:middle line:84%
process at whatever level, you
must be trained, or you will
00:11:24.780 --> 00:11:26.250 align:middle line:90%
get killed.
00:11:26.250 --> 00:11:30.180 align:middle line:84%
It builds that hard core that
I talked about earlier, that
00:11:30.180 --> 00:11:35.710 align:middle line:84%
hard core of those 12 to 15 3:00
AM types who will charge
00:11:35.710 --> 00:11:39.010 align:middle line:84%
any breast work, who will take
six bullets before they hit
00:11:39.010 --> 00:11:41.770 align:middle line:84%
the ground, who will do anything
that you ask them to
00:11:41.770 --> 00:11:45.130 align:middle line:84%
do at any time of the day or
night, and make it happen.
00:11:45.130 --> 00:11:47.840 align:middle line:84%
When I joined in January of
\'91, there really wasn\'t a
00:11:47.840 --> 00:11:49.240 align:middle line:90%
grassroots organization yet.
00:11:49.240 --> 00:11:50.880 align:middle line:84%
There were people out there that
were interested in this.
00:11:50.880 --> 00:11:53.440 align:middle line:84%
They\'d had a founding
conference, they\'d had some
00:11:53.440 --> 00:11:57.810 align:middle line:84%
training schools, but very
few local chapters yet.
00:11:57.810 --> 00:12:00.330 align:middle line:84%
And my job was to
oversee this.
00:12:00.330 --> 00:12:02.570 align:middle line:84%
And we came along with our
training programs and said,
00:12:02.570 --> 00:12:03.740 align:middle line:90%
this is how you can do it.
00:12:03.740 --> 00:12:06.115 align:middle line:84%
We came along with our
organizational programs and
00:12:06.115 --> 00:12:08.630 align:middle line:84%
said, this is how you can lobby
at the local level, how
00:12:08.630 --> 00:12:10.370 align:middle line:84%
you can do it effectively,
how you can work
00:12:10.370 --> 00:12:12.100 align:middle line:90%
together as one voice.
00:12:12.100 --> 00:12:16.270 align:middle line:84%
And that was received, because
people were hungry for
00:12:16.270 --> 00:12:20.700 align:middle line:84%
something that was
process-driven even more than
00:12:20.700 --> 00:12:22.480 align:middle line:90%
message-driven.
00:12:22.480 --> 00:12:25.070 align:middle line:84%
The first really big one that
I remember was the Clarence
00:12:25.070 --> 00:12:27.440 align:middle line:90%
Thomas nomination.
00:12:27.440 --> 00:12:30.880 align:middle line:84%
In the summer of 1983,
I did have dinner
00:12:30.880 --> 00:12:32.000 align:middle line:90%
with Clarence Thomas.
00:12:32.000 --> 00:12:35.280 align:middle line:84%
We knew, as everyone else did,
that as the whole thing was
00:12:35.280 --> 00:12:37.810 align:middle line:84%
exploding, that this vote
was going to be a
00:12:37.810 --> 00:12:39.770 align:middle line:90%
very, very close vote.
00:12:39.770 --> 00:12:41.890 align:middle line:84%
And we did like any
good grassroots
00:12:41.890 --> 00:12:42.840 align:middle line:90%
organization would do.
00:12:42.840 --> 00:12:46.020 align:middle line:84%
We identified who we thought
were the swing votes on the
00:12:46.020 --> 00:12:50.080 align:middle line:84%
Senate, and we mobilized our
people in those states to make
00:12:50.080 --> 00:12:50.600 align:middle line:90%
phone calls.
00:12:50.600 --> 00:12:53.750 align:middle line:84%
And I know that we made tens of
thousands of phone calls.
00:12:53.750 --> 00:12:56.210 align:middle line:84%
During the confirmation hearing
of Judge Clarence
00:12:56.210 --> 00:12:59.430 align:middle line:84%
Thomas, the Christian Coalition
aired television
00:12:59.430 --> 00:13:02.860 align:middle line:84%
commercials in the states of key
senators, generating over
00:13:02.860 --> 00:13:05.340 align:middle line:90%
100,000 calls.
00:13:05.340 --> 00:13:07.000 align:middle line:84%
But the Thomas nomination
has opened
00:13:07.000 --> 00:13:09.580 align:middle line:90%
old wounds over abortion.
00:13:09.580 --> 00:13:12.720 align:middle line:84%
There was also a clear
perception that this man was
00:13:12.720 --> 00:13:15.050 align:middle line:84%
the target of a tremendous smear
campaign by the liberal
00:13:15.050 --> 00:13:16.300 align:middle line:90%
establishment.
00:13:16.300 --> 00:13:20.720 align:middle line:90%
00:13:20.720 --> 00:13:23.742 align:middle line:84%
The mistake, I think, that was
made by those who did this
00:13:23.742 --> 00:13:26.620 align:middle line:84%
is-- they didn\'t realize that
there was a sleeping giant out
00:13:26.620 --> 00:13:29.110 align:middle line:84%
there that would take this
man on as a champion.
00:13:29.110 --> 00:13:35.280 align:middle line:90%
00:13:35.280 --> 00:13:38.250 align:middle line:84%
One person can make
a difference.
00:13:38.250 --> 00:13:41.940 align:middle line:84%
And as the Bible says,
if God be for us, who
00:13:41.940 --> 00:13:45.290 align:middle line:90%
can be against us?
00:13:45.290 --> 00:13:48.230 align:middle line:84%
25 million children that are
dead are enough to damn any
00:13:48.230 --> 00:13:50.820 align:middle line:84%
nation to hell and to ultimate
judgement, period.
00:13:50.820 --> 00:13:54.080 align:middle line:84%
But suffice it to say that the
blood that has been shed, and
00:13:54.080 --> 00:13:57.770 align:middle line:84%
now stains the garbage dumps
of America, now stains the
00:13:57.770 --> 00:14:00.230 align:middle line:84%
once land of the free and
home of the brave.
00:14:00.230 --> 00:14:03.550 align:middle line:84%
That blood is crying from the
ground to the God of heaven
00:14:03.550 --> 00:14:05.760 align:middle line:84%
and earth, saying how
long, oh Lord?
00:14:05.760 --> 00:14:11.080 align:middle line:84%
In 1986 and \'87, when Operation
Rescue was really
00:14:11.080 --> 00:14:15.900 align:middle line:84%
being birthed in my heart, one
key book was Coretta Scott
00:14:15.900 --> 00:14:20.010 align:middle line:84%
King\'s book, My Life with Martin
Luther King, Jr. So I
00:14:20.010 --> 00:14:23.010 align:middle line:84%
looked at the Civil Rights
Movement, I saw the video
00:14:23.010 --> 00:14:26.760 align:middle line:84%
series, Eyes on the Prize, and I
said, there\'s something here
00:14:26.760 --> 00:14:28.000 align:middle line:90%
in these tactics.
00:14:28.000 --> 00:14:29.870 align:middle line:84%
Now, some of my Christian
friends will
00:14:29.870 --> 00:14:31.300 align:middle line:90%
say, that\'s an outrage.
00:14:31.300 --> 00:14:33.650 align:middle line:84%
Those were socialist or
communist tactics.
00:14:33.650 --> 00:14:36.040 align:middle line:90%
Well, I want to be careful.
00:14:36.040 --> 00:14:38.060 align:middle line:84%
Civil disobedience was
practiced quite
00:14:38.060 --> 00:14:40.000 align:middle line:90%
a bit in the Bible.
00:14:40.000 --> 00:14:43.000 align:middle line:84%
The issue was, who was
right, God or man?
00:14:43.000 --> 00:14:44.130 align:middle line:90%
And you had to go with God.
00:14:44.130 --> 00:14:49.360 align:middle line:90%
[SINGING]
00:14:49.360 --> 00:14:51.750 align:middle line:84%
Wichita was picked for
a couple reasons.
00:14:51.750 --> 00:14:53.620 align:middle line:90%
It\'s the heartland of America.
00:14:53.620 --> 00:14:55.450 align:middle line:90%
Start your engines.
00:14:55.450 --> 00:14:59.170 align:middle line:84%
Wichita was picked because
it had George Tiller, an
00:14:59.170 --> 00:15:01.740 align:middle line:84%
abortionist who kills babies
in the third trimester.
00:15:01.740 --> 00:15:12.630 align:middle line:90%
[SINGING]
00:15:12.630 --> 00:15:14.440 align:middle line:90%
It just went wild.
00:15:14.440 --> 00:15:15.340 align:middle line:90%
It just exploded.
00:15:15.340 --> 00:15:17.430 align:middle line:84%
People were like, yes, and they
began coming in from all
00:15:17.430 --> 00:15:18.070 align:middle line:90%
over the country.
00:15:18.070 --> 00:15:19.230 align:middle line:84%
They came in from all
over the state.
00:15:19.230 --> 00:15:22.080 align:middle line:90%
It was awesome.
00:15:22.080 --> 00:15:23.590 align:middle line:84%
We thought, hey, why
stay a week?
00:15:23.590 --> 00:15:25.180 align:middle line:84%
Let\'s stay a month, let\'s
stay the summer.
00:15:25.180 --> 00:15:27.551 align:middle line:84%
Let\'s see how long
we can stay.
00:15:27.551 --> 00:15:30.010 align:middle line:90%
In the name of Jesus Christ.
00:15:30.010 --> 00:15:32.960 align:middle line:84%
August 5, 1991, US District
Judge Patrick Kelly issued a
00:15:32.960 --> 00:15:34.490 align:middle line:90%
preliminary injunction.
00:15:34.490 --> 00:15:36.860 align:middle line:84%
Anyone obstructing access to
this clinic or violating any
00:15:36.860 --> 00:15:39.720 align:middle line:84%
conditions of the preliminary
injunction will be arrested.
00:15:39.720 --> 00:15:42.210 align:middle line:84%
The price of protesting abortion
in Wichita has
00:15:42.210 --> 00:15:45.300 align:middle line:84%
changed, and federal marshals
are in back of me to make sure
00:15:45.300 --> 00:15:48.270 align:middle line:84%
that the people from Operation
Rescue understand that.
00:15:48.270 --> 00:15:50.690 align:middle line:84%
From now on, if they\'re
arrested, they face being
00:15:50.690 --> 00:15:53.920 align:middle line:84%
locked up in Fort Leavenworth,
or 30 other prison facilities
00:15:53.920 --> 00:15:54.980 align:middle line:90%
across the state.
00:15:54.980 --> 00:15:56.310 align:middle line:84%
You are under arrest
at this time.
00:15:56.310 --> 00:15:59.960 align:middle line:84%
Officers, begin arresting
them.
00:15:59.960 --> 00:16:03.320 align:middle line:84%
If you look at our brochure and
our pledge, people have to
00:16:03.320 --> 00:16:06.400 align:middle line:84%
sign a pledge of nonviolence to
participate in an Operation
00:16:06.400 --> 00:16:07.490 align:middle line:90%
Rescue event.
00:16:07.490 --> 00:16:36.695 align:middle line:90%
[SINGING]
00:16:36.695 --> 00:16:38.180 align:middle line:90%
Born-again bigots, go away--
00:16:38.180 --> 00:16:40.655 align:middle line:90%
racist, sexist, anti-gay.
00:16:40.655 --> 00:16:43.130 align:middle line:90%
Born-again bigots, go away--
00:16:43.130 --> 00:16:46.350 align:middle line:90%
racist, sexist, anti-gay.
00:16:46.350 --> 00:16:49.780 align:middle line:84%
More than 5,000 abortion rights
advocates rallied and
00:16:49.780 --> 00:16:53.570 align:middle line:84%
railed against the six weeks of
anti-abortion protests that
00:16:53.570 --> 00:16:54.480 align:middle line:90%
have gripped Wichita.
00:16:54.480 --> 00:16:57.750 align:middle line:84%
We tell Operation
Rescue, go home.
00:16:57.750 --> 00:17:01.120 align:middle line:90%
Go home.
00:17:01.120 --> 00:17:06.130 align:middle line:84%
I\'m tired of the name you\'re
giving to our city, as we are
00:17:06.130 --> 00:17:07.640 align:middle line:90%
law-abiding people.
00:17:07.640 --> 00:17:10.780 align:middle line:84%
You come from out of state
and break the laws.
00:17:10.780 --> 00:17:13.535 align:middle line:90%
00:17:13.535 --> 00:17:46.337 align:middle line:90%
00:17:46.337 --> 00:17:47.828 align:middle line:90%
I\'m going to go to the gate?
00:17:47.828 --> 00:17:50.313 align:middle line:90%
Under this gate--
00:17:50.313 --> 00:17:53.370 align:middle line:90%
under, under.
00:17:53.370 --> 00:17:54.880 align:middle line:84%
They\'re dividing my
family, they\'ve
00:17:54.880 --> 00:17:57.710 align:middle line:90%
divided me with my friends.
00:17:57.710 --> 00:18:00.270 align:middle line:84%
Neighbors are against
neighbors.
00:18:00.270 --> 00:18:05.910 align:middle line:90%
And it\'s sad, it\'s really sad.
00:18:05.910 --> 00:18:08.770 align:middle line:84%
In federal court, Judge Patrick
Kelly ruled that
00:18:08.770 --> 00:18:12.520 align:middle line:84%
Operation Rescue was acting as
if it was above the law.
00:18:12.520 --> 00:18:15.890 align:middle line:84%
They\'ve had all the warning
they\'re going to get.
00:18:15.890 --> 00:18:18.360 align:middle line:84%
And I only say to them, they
ought to consult their
00:18:18.360 --> 00:18:21.410 align:middle line:84%
attorney before they go
to the scene, because
00:18:21.410 --> 00:18:22.620 align:middle line:90%
they\'re going to jail.
00:18:22.620 --> 00:18:27.520 align:middle line:84%
I have never seen in my life a
judge this out of control, who
00:18:27.520 --> 00:18:29.880 align:middle line:90%
has become lawless.
00:18:29.880 --> 00:18:34.070 align:middle line:84%
He literally has taken all law
into his own hands, such as
00:18:34.070 --> 00:18:38.280 align:middle line:84%
you would expect from a
Nazi judge in Germany.
00:18:38.280 --> 00:18:41.340 align:middle line:84%
Late today, Operation Rescue\'s
lawyers produced the Justice
00:18:41.340 --> 00:18:43.330 align:middle line:90%
Department document.
00:18:43.330 --> 00:18:45.530 align:middle line:84%
It argued that Kelly exceeded
his authority
00:18:45.530 --> 00:18:47.510 align:middle line:90%
and abused his power.
00:18:47.510 --> 00:18:49.850 align:middle line:84%
Upon learning of the Bush
administration\'s opinion,
00:18:49.850 --> 00:18:53.940 align:middle line:84%
Kelly said, \"I believe this
decision is a political one.
00:18:53.940 --> 00:18:56.320 align:middle line:84%
I\'m disgusted by the
United States.\"
00:18:56.320 --> 00:19:00.070 align:middle line:84%
The attorney general\'s office
during the Bush administration
00:19:00.070 --> 00:19:03.150 align:middle line:84%
filed a brief on our behalf,
saying that this judge\'s order
00:19:03.150 --> 00:19:06.090 align:middle line:84%
was outside of the boundaries of
his constitutional powers,
00:19:06.090 --> 00:19:07.430 align:middle line:90%
which it was.
00:19:07.430 --> 00:19:09.170 align:middle line:84%
We thought, the leaders here
thought, we should try to meet
00:19:09.170 --> 00:19:10.070 align:middle line:90%
with the president.
00:19:10.070 --> 00:19:12.510 align:middle line:84%
So I and Reverend Patrick
Mahoney, we flew out to
00:19:12.510 --> 00:19:15.170 align:middle line:84%
Kennebunkport to try
and meet with him.
00:19:15.170 --> 00:19:16.040 align:middle line:90%
It\'s golf day.
00:19:16.040 --> 00:19:17.290 align:middle line:90%
[INTERPOSING VOICES]
00:19:17.290 --> 00:19:20.850 align:middle line:90%
00:19:20.850 --> 00:19:24.340 align:middle line:84%
As of yesterday, over 2,200
people have been arrested.
00:19:24.340 --> 00:19:28.580 align:middle line:84%
25 women have decided to keep
their children through the
00:19:28.580 --> 00:19:31.255 align:middle line:90%
efforts of Operation Rescue.
00:19:31.255 --> 00:19:32.650 align:middle line:90%
He made it.
00:19:32.650 --> 00:19:34.090 align:middle line:90%
Oh, shoot.
00:19:34.090 --> 00:19:37.220 align:middle line:84%
It may look like it\'s all play
here in Maine, but the duties
00:19:37.220 --> 00:19:39.830 align:middle line:84%
of the office follow the
president wherever he goes.
00:19:39.830 --> 00:19:43.050 align:middle line:90%
00:19:43.050 --> 00:19:44.570 align:middle line:84%
I\'m trying to get
a vacation here.
00:19:44.570 --> 00:19:46.590 align:middle line:90%
I\'m sure they\'ll understand.
00:19:46.590 --> 00:19:48.340 align:middle line:84%
If I did meet with them,
I\'d say, hey, please
00:19:48.340 --> 00:19:50.160 align:middle line:90%
abide with the law.
00:19:50.160 --> 00:19:53.520 align:middle line:84%
Don\'t violate a judge\'s order,
and stay within the law.
00:19:53.520 --> 00:19:54.100 align:middle line:90%
He\'s on vacation.
00:19:54.100 --> 00:19:55.660 align:middle line:84%
And there are a lot of groups
that want to meet with him,
00:19:55.660 --> 00:19:56.830 align:middle line:84%
and he\'s not going
to meet with you.
00:19:56.830 --> 00:20:00.000 align:middle line:84%
Yeah, obviously we flew
in last night.
00:20:00.000 --> 00:20:02.010 align:middle line:84%
And I know what it\'s like to be
on vacation and not want to
00:20:02.010 --> 00:20:02.710 align:middle line:90%
be disturbed.
00:20:02.710 --> 00:20:04.390 align:middle line:84%
If we can\'t meet with the
president, then we\'ll do our
00:20:04.390 --> 00:20:07.090 align:middle line:84%
best to meet with some of his
senior staff and just see to
00:20:07.090 --> 00:20:10.190 align:middle line:84%
it that the letter that we
have written gets to him.
00:20:10.190 --> 00:20:13.060 align:middle line:90%
00:20:13.060 --> 00:20:16.915 align:middle line:84%
We don\'t want to get romantic
and rewrite history somehow
00:20:16.915 --> 00:20:20.410 align:middle line:84%
and think that George Bush was
in favor of Operation Rescue.
00:20:20.410 --> 00:20:21.120 align:middle line:90%
Because he wasn\'t.
00:20:21.120 --> 00:20:24.590 align:middle line:84%
He said explicitly, don\'t break
the law, you people.
00:20:24.590 --> 00:20:26.110 align:middle line:84%
It\'s going to be a
heck of a day.
00:20:26.110 --> 00:20:28.680 align:middle line:84%
I think that the president and
Sununu and his advisers viewed
00:20:28.680 --> 00:20:31.410 align:middle line:90%
us as a political liability.
00:20:31.410 --> 00:20:35.440 align:middle line:84%
This is that lukewarm,
mealy-mouthed pro-life
00:20:35.440 --> 00:20:40.180 align:middle line:84%
Republican position that has no
teeth and is really of very
00:20:40.180 --> 00:20:41.945 align:middle line:84%
little use to ending
this slaughter.
00:20:41.945 --> 00:20:44.790 align:middle line:90%
00:20:44.790 --> 00:20:49.410 align:middle line:84%
Let me just say how deeply I
support all the work you\'re
00:20:49.410 --> 00:20:53.350 align:middle line:84%
doing to restore the spiritual
foundation of this nation.
00:20:53.350 --> 00:20:55.550 align:middle line:84%
I join with you in committing
to uphold
00:20:55.550 --> 00:20:57.580 align:middle line:90%
the sanctity of life.
00:20:57.580 --> 00:21:05.118 align:middle line:90%
[APPLAUSE]
00:21:05.118 --> 00:21:36.970 align:middle line:90%
[SINGING]
00:21:36.970 --> 00:21:40.440 align:middle line:84%
If, for example, you\'ve been
neglecting your spouse for the
00:21:40.440 --> 00:21:44.560 align:middle line:84%
last decade, you might feel it
necessary to shower her or him
00:21:44.560 --> 00:21:46.780 align:middle line:90%
with four dozen roses.
00:21:46.780 --> 00:21:50.040 align:middle line:84%
But if you\'ve been a faithful
and loving husband or wife
00:21:50.040 --> 00:21:52.760 align:middle line:84%
forever, a simple, I
love you, will do.
00:21:52.760 --> 00:21:58.440 align:middle line:84%
Well, the Bush campaign found
it necessary, because of a
00:21:58.440 --> 00:22:00.900 align:middle line:84%
real problem with conservatives
in its own
00:22:00.900 --> 00:22:04.670 align:middle line:84%
party, to send the equivalent
of four dozen roses.
00:22:04.670 --> 00:22:08.770 align:middle line:84%
And that became known as
the Houston Convention.
00:22:08.770 --> 00:22:12.860 align:middle line:84%
There is a religious war going
on in this country.
00:22:12.860 --> 00:22:17.780 align:middle line:84%
It is a cultural war as critical
to the kind of nation
00:22:17.780 --> 00:22:20.500 align:middle line:84%
we shall be as the
Cold War itself.
00:22:20.500 --> 00:22:23.850 align:middle line:84%
But this war is for the
soul of America.
00:22:23.850 --> 00:22:27.550 align:middle line:84%
And in that struggle for the
soul of America, Clinton and
00:22:27.550 --> 00:22:30.170 align:middle line:84%
Clinton are on the other
side, and George
00:22:30.170 --> 00:22:31.615 align:middle line:90%
Bush is on our side.
00:22:31.615 --> 00:22:37.820 align:middle line:90%
[APPLAUSE]
00:22:37.820 --> 00:22:41.410 align:middle line:84%
They were very clearly there to
be counted and to express
00:22:41.410 --> 00:22:43.410 align:middle line:84%
themselves, and to
have their way.
00:22:43.410 --> 00:22:46.495 align:middle line:84%
And they were a very,
very strong force.
00:22:46.495 --> 00:22:49.610 align:middle line:84%
The combined forces of the
conservative movement together
00:22:49.610 --> 00:22:51.850 align:middle line:84%
had elected a good number
of delegates to
00:22:51.850 --> 00:22:52.690 align:middle line:90%
the platform committee.
00:22:52.690 --> 00:22:54.720 align:middle line:84%
That was their premier
interest--
00:22:54.720 --> 00:22:56.890 align:middle line:90%
keeping the platform pro-life.
00:22:56.890 --> 00:22:59.880 align:middle line:84%
And what has made the
Republican Party the
00:22:59.880 --> 00:23:04.000 align:middle line:84%
mainstream majority party in
this country is when Ronald
00:23:04.000 --> 00:23:06.920 align:middle line:84%
Reagan adopted a pro-life
position.
00:23:06.920 --> 00:23:10.500 align:middle line:84%
And then all of a sudden the 27
million people who worked
00:23:10.500 --> 00:23:13.890 align:middle line:84%
for Barry Goldwater, of whom I
was proud to have been one,
00:23:13.890 --> 00:23:16.600 align:middle line:90%
grew to 54 million.
00:23:16.600 --> 00:23:17.690 align:middle line:90%
We doubled our size.
00:23:17.690 --> 00:23:20.140 align:middle line:84%
This is what the pro-life
movement has done for the
00:23:20.140 --> 00:23:21.500 align:middle line:90%
Republican Party.
00:23:21.500 --> 00:23:24.890 align:middle line:84%
And any Republican powers that
be are fools not to see it.
00:23:24.890 --> 00:23:27.950 align:middle line:84%
Something\'s rotten in Denmark,
and also in Houston, when I
00:23:27.950 --> 00:23:30.690 align:middle line:84%
take a resolution into a
committee of nine people, many
00:23:30.690 --> 00:23:33.050 align:middle line:84%
of whom I know are pro-choice,
but they\'re
00:23:33.050 --> 00:23:34.240 align:middle line:90%
afraid to speak up.
00:23:34.240 --> 00:23:36.890 align:middle line:84%
Then, I have to come to the
conclusion that the party has
00:23:36.890 --> 00:23:38.550 align:middle line:90%
been put in a straitjacket.
00:23:38.550 --> 00:23:39.553 align:middle line:90%
What do we want?
00:23:39.553 --> 00:23:40.500 align:middle line:90%
Choice.
00:23:40.500 --> 00:23:43.450 align:middle line:84%
According to a recent ABC News
poll, most Americans favor a
00:23:43.450 --> 00:23:45.510 align:middle line:84%
woman\'s right to choose an
abortion under certain
00:23:45.510 --> 00:23:46.850 align:middle line:90%
circumstances.
00:23:46.850 --> 00:23:48.840 align:middle line:90%
Only 10% oppose it.
00:23:48.840 --> 00:23:51.190 align:middle line:84%
The party\'s on the verge of
committing political suicide.
00:23:51.190 --> 00:23:52.420 align:middle line:90%
People have had it.
00:23:52.420 --> 00:23:55.160 align:middle line:84%
People are very annoyed that the
party hierarchy can\'t see
00:23:55.160 --> 00:23:58.310 align:middle line:84%
what the party regulars see and
what the majority wants.
00:23:58.310 --> 00:24:00.390 align:middle line:84%
And that is that we have a
platform that reflects the
00:24:00.390 --> 00:24:02.230 align:middle line:84%
diversity in our party
that reflects
00:24:02.230 --> 00:24:03.660 align:middle line:90%
the pro-choice majority.
00:24:03.660 --> 00:24:07.150 align:middle line:84%
Our view is that this is the
most conservative and the most
00:24:07.150 --> 00:24:10.920 align:middle line:84%
pro-family platform in the
history of this party.
00:24:10.920 --> 00:24:14.700 align:middle line:84%
We believe that this president
can go out and run on this
00:24:14.700 --> 00:24:18.660 align:middle line:84%
platform, he can take this
platform the American people,
00:24:18.660 --> 00:24:21.290 align:middle line:84%
and he can win on
this platform.
00:24:21.290 --> 00:24:24.920 align:middle line:84%
Stop being seduced by this
stupid party platform.
00:24:24.920 --> 00:24:27.230 align:middle line:84%
I mean, I\'m thankful that
it\'s there in words.
00:24:27.230 --> 00:24:28.840 align:middle line:90%
But darn it, I want deeds.
00:24:28.840 --> 00:24:32.230 align:middle line:84%
I\'d rather have silence in the
platform about child killing
00:24:32.230 --> 00:24:35.910 align:middle line:84%
and have Republican senators
and representatives who are
00:24:35.910 --> 00:24:38.530 align:middle line:90%
fierce pro-lifers.
00:24:38.530 --> 00:24:40.140 align:middle line:84%
Don\'t put bumper stickers
all over your car.
00:24:40.140 --> 00:24:41.860 align:middle line:90%
Do something for me.
00:24:41.860 --> 00:24:44.260 align:middle line:84%
You can argue that the Houston
Convention was
00:24:44.260 --> 00:24:47.330 align:middle line:84%
overly-orchestrated in the
direction of the religious
00:24:47.330 --> 00:24:51.315 align:middle line:84%
right, because still, after
everything Bush did to win the
00:24:51.315 --> 00:24:52.760 align:middle line:84%
support of this constituency,
it still
00:24:52.760 --> 00:24:53.800 align:middle line:90%
didn\'t fully trust him.
00:24:53.800 --> 00:24:56.600 align:middle line:84%
So again, they pushed the
convention farther to that
00:24:56.600 --> 00:25:00.370 align:middle line:84%
side than they probably should
have, and so it was a price
00:25:00.370 --> 00:25:03.120 align:middle line:90%
Bush kept paying.
00:25:03.120 --> 00:25:07.850 align:middle line:84%
38% of the vote for a sitting
president running for
00:25:07.850 --> 00:25:09.370 align:middle line:90%
re-election--
00:25:09.370 --> 00:25:11.060 align:middle line:90%
truly phenomenally bad.
00:25:11.060 --> 00:25:14.120 align:middle line:90%
00:25:14.120 --> 00:25:18.970 align:middle line:84%
Politics is about making
compromises, religion isn\'t.
00:25:18.970 --> 00:25:21.750 align:middle line:84%
Religion is about believing what
you believe, because you
00:25:21.750 --> 00:25:25.040 align:middle line:84%
believe that these things are
revealed from heaven.
00:25:25.040 --> 00:25:28.440 align:middle line:84%
Politics is about getting along
with people who believe
00:25:28.440 --> 00:25:30.950 align:middle line:84%
that other things are revealed,
or who believe that
00:25:30.950 --> 00:25:32.450 align:middle line:90%
nothing is revealed.
00:25:32.450 --> 00:25:35.640 align:middle line:84%
After Bush\'s defeat, some
conservative leaders decided
00:25:35.640 --> 00:25:38.960 align:middle line:84%
their agenda was too narrowly
confined to social issues.
00:25:38.960 --> 00:25:41.700 align:middle line:84%
They pushed for casting
a wider net.
00:25:41.700 --> 00:25:44.290 align:middle line:84%
Our position is that
a political
00:25:44.290 --> 00:25:45.920 align:middle line:90%
party is not a church.
00:25:45.920 --> 00:25:48.400 align:middle line:84%
It\'s not designed to
proselytize, it\'s designed to
00:25:48.400 --> 00:25:49.090 align:middle line:90%
win elections.
00:25:49.090 --> 00:25:52.270 align:middle line:84%
And in order to do that, it\'s
got to get 50% plus 1.
00:25:52.270 --> 00:25:55.580 align:middle line:84%
Which means by definition,
in a democracy,
00:25:55.580 --> 00:25:56.990 align:middle line:90%
it\'s a patch quilt.
00:25:56.990 --> 00:25:58.290 align:middle line:90%
It\'s not a blanket.
00:25:58.290 --> 00:26:02.180 align:middle line:84%
It\'s not, we all agree, we\'re
unanimous on every issue.
00:26:02.180 --> 00:26:04.750 align:middle line:84%
You\'ve got to have economic
conservatives, you\'ve got to
00:26:04.750 --> 00:26:06.710 align:middle line:84%
have foreign policy
conservatives.
00:26:06.710 --> 00:26:09.740 align:middle line:84%
You\'ve even got to have some
libertarians who disagree with
00:26:09.740 --> 00:26:11.360 align:middle line:90%
me on social issues.
00:26:11.360 --> 00:26:15.350 align:middle line:84%
You see a lot of potential
political influence power
00:26:15.350 --> 00:26:18.570 align:middle line:84%
brokerage roles in the
Republican Party, and they
00:26:18.570 --> 00:26:22.910 align:middle line:84%
don\'t want to blow this by
talking about fetuses in
00:26:22.910 --> 00:26:25.760 align:middle line:84%
formaldehyde or some of
the old war cries of
00:26:25.760 --> 00:26:27.250 align:middle line:90%
the religious right.
00:26:27.250 --> 00:26:29.470 align:middle line:84%
This is all about
persuasion here.
00:26:29.470 --> 00:26:31.700 align:middle line:84%
And so one of the things that I
would try to communicate to
00:26:31.700 --> 00:26:34.880 align:middle line:84%
Christian Coalition activists
is, you are trying to persuade
00:26:34.880 --> 00:26:36.550 align:middle line:90%
people to agree with you.
00:26:36.550 --> 00:26:39.680 align:middle line:84%
So do so in a way that\'s the
most likely to win them to
00:26:39.680 --> 00:26:40.580 align:middle line:90%
your way of thinking.
00:26:40.580 --> 00:26:41.830 align:middle line:84%
[MUSIC - \"AMERICA
THE BEAUTIFUL\"]
00:26:41.830 --> 00:26:52.780 align:middle line:90%
00:26:52.780 --> 00:26:56.160 align:middle line:84%
Your goal must be to portray a
desired image each and every
00:26:56.160 --> 00:26:58.275 align:middle line:84%
time you speak on behalf
of Christian Coalition.
00:26:58.275 --> 00:26:59.525 align:middle line:84%
[MUSIC - \"AMERICA
THE BEAUTIFUL\"]
00:26:59.525 --> 00:27:04.310 align:middle line:90%
00:27:04.310 --> 00:27:07.000 align:middle line:84%
We learned that how you say
things is sometimes more
00:27:07.000 --> 00:27:08.890 align:middle line:90%
important than what you say.
00:27:08.890 --> 00:27:11.650 align:middle line:84%
And I think that that\'s a
very important message.
00:27:11.650 --> 00:27:15.130 align:middle line:84%
I think that you have to speak
in a vernacular that your
00:27:15.130 --> 00:27:17.260 align:middle line:84%
entire audience can
understand.
00:27:17.260 --> 00:27:19.860 align:middle line:90%
Matthew 7:6--
00:27:19.860 --> 00:27:22.550 align:middle line:84%
do not give to dogs
what is sacred.
00:27:22.550 --> 00:27:25.350 align:middle line:84%
Do not throw your
pearls to pigs.
00:27:25.350 --> 00:27:29.300 align:middle line:84%
If you do, they may trample
them under their feet, and
00:27:29.300 --> 00:27:33.170 align:middle line:84%
then turn and tear
you to pieces.
00:27:33.170 --> 00:27:36.440 align:middle line:84%
It\'s important to learn to frame
the issues by your use
00:27:36.440 --> 00:27:37.530 align:middle line:90%
of language.
00:27:37.530 --> 00:27:40.590 align:middle line:84%
Refuse to use the opposition\'s
buzz words, and take every
00:27:40.590 --> 00:27:43.280 align:middle line:84%
opportunity to place them
on the defensive.
00:27:43.280 --> 00:27:47.283 align:middle line:84%
For example, replace the term
\"anti-abortion\" with
00:27:47.283 --> 00:27:47.726 align:middle line:90%
\"pro-life.\"
00:27:47.726 --> 00:27:50.940 align:middle line:84%
Do you think abortion should
be permissible in cases of
00:27:50.940 --> 00:27:53.020 align:middle line:84%
rape or incest or where
the life of the
00:27:53.020 --> 00:27:54.280 align:middle line:90%
mother is in danger?
00:27:54.280 --> 00:27:56.960 align:middle line:84%
Well, I think what we believe
as an organization is that
00:27:56.960 --> 00:27:59.720 align:middle line:84%
abortion should not be used as
a form of birth control.
00:27:59.720 --> 00:28:01.800 align:middle line:84%
But should it be permissible
in cases of rape or incest
00:28:01.800 --> 00:28:02.390 align:middle line:90%
specifically?
00:28:02.390 --> 00:28:06.420 align:middle line:84%
Al, we favor a law that would
allow for an exception to
00:28:06.420 --> 00:28:07.690 align:middle line:90%
protect the mother.
00:28:07.690 --> 00:28:09.470 align:middle line:90%
But not for rape or incest.
00:28:09.470 --> 00:28:10.430 align:middle line:90%
But-- let me finish.
00:28:10.430 --> 00:28:13.740 align:middle line:84%
But if necessary in order to
pass a law, if it became
00:28:13.740 --> 00:28:15.960 align:middle line:84%
necessary in order to build
the coalition and get the
00:28:15.960 --> 00:28:19.240 align:middle line:84%
votes to pass the law, we would
favor, or at least we
00:28:19.240 --> 00:28:22.530 align:middle line:84%
would allow, rape and incest
exceptions, sure.
00:28:22.530 --> 00:28:24.930 align:middle line:84%
It\'s easy for me to stand up
and say, I\'m pro-life, when
00:28:24.930 --> 00:28:27.610 align:middle line:84%
I\'m surrounded by 1,000
screaming pro-lifers.
00:28:27.610 --> 00:28:30.690 align:middle line:84%
It\'s another thing to stand
up in a crowd of hostile
00:28:30.690 --> 00:28:34.460 align:middle line:84%
adversaries and say, I am
pro-life, and I\'m dedicated to
00:28:34.460 --> 00:28:38.960 align:middle line:84%
destroying the abortion movement
that you stand for.
00:28:38.960 --> 00:28:44.290 align:middle line:84%
This is so important that I
would not recommend compromise
00:28:44.290 --> 00:28:46.130 align:middle line:90%
in the political arena on it.
00:28:46.130 --> 00:28:49.420 align:middle line:84%
And I think that the extent
that candidates or
00:28:49.420 --> 00:28:52.830 align:middle line:84%
organizations do compromise on
that issue, that they at least
00:28:52.830 --> 00:28:56.820 align:middle line:84%
run the risk of alienating their
own base and sending the
00:28:56.820 --> 00:29:00.040 align:middle line:84%
message that they\'re really
not serious about an issue
00:29:00.040 --> 00:29:01.900 align:middle line:84%
like the sanctity
of human life.
00:29:01.900 --> 00:29:05.710 align:middle line:84%
Salami slicing the enemy is more
effective than demanding
00:29:05.710 --> 00:29:08.370 align:middle line:90%
the whole loaf at once.
00:29:08.370 --> 00:29:13.180 align:middle line:84%
It is not compromise to ask for
half of what you want in
00:29:13.180 --> 00:29:15.960 align:middle line:84%
anticipation of asking
for the other half.
00:29:15.960 --> 00:29:17.540 align:middle line:90%
That is not a compromise.
00:29:17.540 --> 00:29:19.420 align:middle line:90%
That is a phased victory.
00:29:19.420 --> 00:29:21.390 align:middle line:84%
Let\'s look at how you
define victory.
00:29:21.390 --> 00:29:23.520 align:middle line:84%
And if you want to win, here\'s
how you\'re going
00:29:23.520 --> 00:29:25.120 align:middle line:90%
to have to do it.
00:29:25.120 --> 00:29:26.990 align:middle line:84%
Otherwise, you\'re
going to lose.
00:29:26.990 --> 00:29:28.660 align:middle line:90%
Now, what do you want to do?
00:29:28.660 --> 00:29:30.330 align:middle line:84%
Do you want to win, or
do you want to lose?
00:29:30.330 --> 00:29:32.150 align:middle line:84%
And I believe that there are
some out there who thoroughly
00:29:32.150 --> 00:29:33.880 align:middle line:84%
enjoy losing, because they
like to make a big
00:29:33.880 --> 00:29:34.415 align:middle line:90%
stink out of it.
00:29:34.415 --> 00:29:36.360 align:middle line:90%
But most want to win.
00:29:36.360 --> 00:29:38.740 align:middle line:84%
We decided that, as long as
there were going to be
00:29:38.740 --> 00:29:41.330 align:middle line:84%
tensions between the economic
conservatives who were
00:29:41.330 --> 00:29:46.800 align:middle line:84%
socially libertarian and the
social conservatives, that
00:29:46.800 --> 00:29:51.090 align:middle line:84%
these two companion elements of
the coalition had to find a
00:29:51.090 --> 00:29:53.940 align:middle line:84%
way to agree more than
they disagreed.
00:29:53.940 --> 00:29:56.020 align:middle line:84%
Among the new war
cries-- taxes.
00:29:56.020 --> 00:29:59.420 align:middle line:84%
The Christian Coalition spent
more than $100,000 on direct
00:29:59.420 --> 00:30:02.450 align:middle line:84%
mail and radio ads opposing
the recent budget plan.
00:30:02.450 --> 00:30:05.710 align:middle line:84%
We began to meet with members
of Congress and lobby them.
00:30:05.710 --> 00:30:08.060 align:middle line:84%
And I began to go in and meet
with both conservative
00:30:08.060 --> 00:30:10.600 align:middle line:84%
Democrats and moderate
pro-choice Republicans and
00:30:10.600 --> 00:30:14.320 align:middle line:84%
say, we want you to sign onto
a bill that\'ll cut taxes for
00:30:14.320 --> 00:30:16.580 align:middle line:90%
families with children.
00:30:16.580 --> 00:30:20.150 align:middle line:84%
And they were stunned, because
they expected me to walk in
00:30:20.150 --> 00:30:22.460 align:middle line:84%
and talk about issues that
we didn\'t agree on.
00:30:22.460 --> 00:30:24.420 align:middle line:84%
All we want is a place
at the table.
00:30:24.420 --> 00:30:26.680 align:middle line:84%
I don\'t want a place
at the table.
00:30:26.680 --> 00:30:28.210 align:middle line:84%
I don\'t want a place at
the table, because
00:30:28.210 --> 00:30:30.130 align:middle line:90%
the table is corrupt.
00:30:30.130 --> 00:30:33.600 align:middle line:84%
They don\'t want to talk about
the social issues and this
00:30:33.600 --> 00:30:37.120 align:middle line:84%
wide agenda-- anti-gay,
anti-abortion, creationism
00:30:37.120 --> 00:30:39.700 align:middle line:84%
taught in school, certain
books out of school.
00:30:39.700 --> 00:30:43.130 align:middle line:84%
What they present themselves
as is tax fighters.
00:30:43.130 --> 00:30:46.230 align:middle line:84%
This is the message that is
subtly being shifted to the
00:30:46.230 --> 00:30:47.770 align:middle line:90%
secular community.
00:30:47.770 --> 00:30:49.750 align:middle line:90%
We want to get things done.
00:30:49.750 --> 00:30:50.780 align:middle line:90%
We want to stop this.
00:30:50.780 --> 00:30:52.060 align:middle line:84%
We want to get that
done, we want to
00:30:52.060 --> 00:30:54.080 align:middle line:90%
accomplish these goals.
00:30:54.080 --> 00:30:58.240 align:middle line:84%
And if we do that, we\'ll have
the Kingdom of God on Earth.
00:30:58.240 --> 00:31:02.290 align:middle line:84%
That\'s what happens when our
American pragmatism meets
00:31:02.290 --> 00:31:03.520 align:middle line:90%
Christianity.
00:31:03.520 --> 00:31:05.950 align:middle line:84%
We transform Christianity
into our
00:31:05.950 --> 00:31:08.940 align:middle line:90%
pragmatic sort of instincts.
00:31:08.940 --> 00:31:13.190 align:middle line:84%
And when we do that, God sort
of gets eliminated from the
00:31:13.190 --> 00:31:16.130 align:middle line:84%
picture, except to come
in at the end of the
00:31:16.130 --> 00:31:17.930 align:middle line:90%
program to bless it.
00:31:17.930 --> 00:31:19.970 align:middle line:84%
With regard to what I\'ve tried
to do with the Christian
00:31:19.970 --> 00:31:23.320 align:middle line:84%
Coalition, and what I think
some of the previous
00:31:23.320 --> 00:31:25.520 align:middle line:84%
manifestations of the religious
conservative
00:31:25.520 --> 00:31:26.980 align:middle line:90%
movement represented--
00:31:26.980 --> 00:31:29.380 align:middle line:84%
it was a very theocratic
agenda.
00:31:29.380 --> 00:31:33.980 align:middle line:84%
It was steeped in theological
language and sometimes
00:31:33.980 --> 00:31:35.250 align:middle line:90%
triumphalist language.
00:31:35.250 --> 00:31:38.630 align:middle line:84%
Arguments were made
directly based on
00:31:38.630 --> 00:31:40.820 align:middle line:90%
one\'s theological beliefs.
00:31:40.820 --> 00:31:44.560 align:middle line:84%
Suffice it to say, Ralph, if you
don\'t base it on biblical
00:31:44.560 --> 00:31:47.190 align:middle line:84%
Christianity, what are
you basing it on?
00:31:47.190 --> 00:31:50.490 align:middle line:84%
The New York Times, the Supreme
Court, the latest
00:31:50.490 --> 00:31:53.870 align:middle line:84%
poll, your friend there who
wrote the \"Contract with
00:31:53.870 --> 00:31:55.200 align:middle line:84%
America\" and then the
\"Contract with
00:31:55.200 --> 00:31:56.200 align:middle line:90%
the American Family\"?
00:31:56.200 --> 00:31:59.710 align:middle line:84%
My understanding is, the man\'s
not professing evangelical.
00:31:59.710 --> 00:32:04.160 align:middle line:84%
And so Ralph is turning to
different people to give us a
00:32:04.160 --> 00:32:06.320 align:middle line:90%
foundation that\'s sand.
00:32:06.320 --> 00:32:08.170 align:middle line:84%
I think what I\'ve really
made clear is, I
00:32:08.170 --> 00:32:10.410 align:middle line:90%
have a personal theology.
00:32:10.410 --> 00:32:13.450 align:middle line:84%
But what I\'m attempting to
legislate is a set of public
00:32:13.450 --> 00:32:16.940 align:middle line:84%
policy prescriptions
to which almost any
00:32:16.940 --> 00:32:19.140 align:middle line:90%
American can subscribe.
00:32:19.140 --> 00:32:23.160 align:middle line:84%
Ralph\'s comment really is
exactly what is wrong with the
00:32:23.160 --> 00:32:24.750 align:middle line:90%
religious right.
00:32:24.750 --> 00:32:27.750 align:middle line:84%
That is exactly what is wrong
with the religious right.
00:32:27.750 --> 00:32:30.670 align:middle line:84%
Because only God can
define right and
00:32:30.670 --> 00:32:33.690 align:middle line:90%
wrong, only God\'s law.
00:32:33.690 --> 00:32:37.270 align:middle line:84%
Once you depart from that,
you\'re on your own.
00:32:37.270 --> 00:32:41.770 align:middle line:84%
Is Ralph going to give us
tablets cut in stone?
00:32:41.770 --> 00:32:42.630 align:middle line:90%
I don\'t think so.
00:32:42.630 --> 00:32:44.660 align:middle line:84%
In fact, he even mocked
that one time.
00:32:44.660 --> 00:32:46.290 align:middle line:84%
He said, these are not
written in stone.
00:32:46.290 --> 00:32:47.465 align:middle line:84%
These are not the Ten
Commandments.
00:32:47.465 --> 00:32:48.880 align:middle line:84%
These are more like
suggestions.
00:32:48.880 --> 00:32:51.050 align:middle line:84%
God didn\'t give us the
Ten Suggestions.
00:32:51.050 --> 00:32:51.730 align:middle line:90%
He gave us the Ten
00:32:51.730 --> 00:32:52.950 align:middle line:90%
Commandments, and they\'re binding.
00:32:52.950 --> 00:32:56.490 align:middle line:84%
And they must be the foundation
of society.
00:32:56.490 --> 00:32:59.030 align:middle line:84%
I think it was probably Oscar
Wilde who said it
00:32:59.030 --> 00:32:59.860 align:middle line:90%
better than I can.
00:32:59.860 --> 00:33:02.800 align:middle line:84%
He said that sometimes you can
tell somebody they\'re going to
00:33:02.800 --> 00:33:04.850 align:middle line:84%
hell in such a way that they
want to get there as quickly
00:33:04.850 --> 00:33:05.315 align:middle line:90%
as possible.
00:33:05.315 --> 00:33:06.565 align:middle line:90%
[INTERPOSING VOICES]
00:33:06.565 --> 00:33:08.520 align:middle line:90%
00:33:08.520 --> 00:33:11.130 align:middle line:84%
Since President Clinton took
office, the anti-abortion
00:33:11.130 --> 00:33:12.950 align:middle line:90%
movement has intensified.
00:33:12.950 --> 00:33:17.610 align:middle line:84%
There have been 122 acts of
violence so far this year.
00:33:17.610 --> 00:33:20.210 align:middle line:84%
Let\'s just really be in
a spirit of prayer.
00:33:20.210 --> 00:33:22.470 align:middle line:84%
Keith Tucci says Operation
Rescue
00:33:22.470 --> 00:33:24.670 align:middle line:90%
condemns acts of violence.
00:33:24.670 --> 00:33:27.640 align:middle line:84%
But he vigorously defends
other tactics.
00:33:27.640 --> 00:33:30.780 align:middle line:84%
Following doctors from abortion
clinics home to their
00:33:30.780 --> 00:33:31.340 align:middle line:90%
neighborhoods.
00:33:31.340 --> 00:33:32.710 align:middle line:84%
No, we don\'t have to
follow doctors.
00:33:32.710 --> 00:33:33.390 align:middle line:90%
We know where they live.
00:33:33.390 --> 00:33:34.990 align:middle line:84%
There\'s no benefit in
us following them.
00:33:34.990 --> 00:33:36.200 align:middle line:90%
We go to their neighborhoods.
00:33:36.200 --> 00:33:37.290 align:middle line:84%
Protesting outside
their homes.
00:33:37.290 --> 00:33:38.570 align:middle line:90%
Absolutely.
00:33:38.570 --> 00:33:40.625 align:middle line:84%
Putting the doctors\' faces
on wanted posters.
00:33:40.625 --> 00:33:41.880 align:middle line:90%
Yes, absolutely.
00:33:41.880 --> 00:33:44.870 align:middle line:84%
Dr. David Gunn was shot after
getting out of his car as he
00:33:44.870 --> 00:33:47.440 align:middle line:84%
came to work at a Pensacola
abortion clinic.
00:33:47.440 --> 00:33:50.260 align:middle line:84%
31-year-old Michael Griffin
was charged with murder.
00:33:50.260 --> 00:33:52.160 align:middle line:84%
A member of his church said
Griffin had offered up a
00:33:52.160 --> 00:33:55.600 align:middle line:84%
prayer for Dr. Gunn
only last Sunday.
00:33:55.600 --> 00:34:00.930 align:middle line:84%
The opposition wants to blame
our rhetoric for a few
00:34:00.930 --> 00:34:02.370 align:middle line:90%
isolated acts.
00:34:02.370 --> 00:34:04.910 align:middle line:90%
I totally, utterly,
00:34:04.910 --> 00:34:08.440 align:middle line:90%
unconditionally reject that assertion.
00:34:08.440 --> 00:34:11.840 align:middle line:84%
The backlash over the killing of
Dr. David Gunn last week in
00:34:11.840 --> 00:34:15.380 align:middle line:84%
Pensacola is having
a profound effect.
00:34:15.380 --> 00:34:17.989 align:middle line:84%
They represent the worst
of evangelical
00:34:17.989 --> 00:34:19.830 align:middle line:90%
excesses in the past.
00:34:19.830 --> 00:34:23.440 align:middle line:84%
And in the past, we paid for
John Brown, we paid for
00:34:23.440 --> 00:34:24.440 align:middle line:90%
William Lloyd Garrison.
00:34:24.440 --> 00:34:26.780 align:middle line:84%
They slowed the course
of abolition.
00:34:26.780 --> 00:34:31.159 align:middle line:84%
And the extremes of Operation
Rescue we will pay for today.
00:34:31.159 --> 00:34:33.300 align:middle line:84%
Did the numbers go down
after the shootings?
00:34:33.300 --> 00:34:34.179 align:middle line:90%
Yes.
00:34:34.179 --> 00:34:36.179 align:middle line:84%
Did people become afraid
after the shootings?
00:34:36.179 --> 00:34:38.719 align:middle line:90%
Yes.
00:34:38.719 --> 00:34:44.210 align:middle line:84%
That is one of the very, very
unfortunate side effects of
00:34:44.210 --> 00:34:45.795 align:middle line:90%
those insane acts.
00:34:45.795 --> 00:34:53.938 align:middle line:90%
00:34:53.938 --> 00:34:55.735 align:middle line:84%
What are you guys getting
ready to send out?
00:34:55.735 --> 00:34:58.640 align:middle line:84%
I think for the religious right,
the quid pro quo of
00:34:58.640 --> 00:34:59.650 align:middle line:90%
politics is very difficult.
00:34:59.650 --> 00:35:02.590 align:middle line:90%
And I\'ll give you an example.
00:35:02.590 --> 00:35:07.660 align:middle line:84%
Ralph Reed, who I by the way
think is a political genius,
00:35:07.660 --> 00:35:09.650 align:middle line:84%
made very clear to me at one
point in time that I should
00:35:09.650 --> 00:35:10.990 align:middle line:90%
watch and wait and listen.
00:35:10.990 --> 00:35:13.250 align:middle line:84%
Because the Christian Coalition
was going to have a
00:35:13.250 --> 00:35:16.750 align:middle line:84%
very, very active role in the
passage of NAFTA, the North
00:35:16.750 --> 00:35:18.270 align:middle line:90%
American Free Trade Agreement.
00:35:18.270 --> 00:35:20.730 align:middle line:84%
And he was going to generate
lots of grassroots efforts and
00:35:20.730 --> 00:35:22.830 align:middle line:90%
lots of money going into that.
00:35:22.830 --> 00:35:25.840 align:middle line:84%
And then, he had his convention
in September.
00:35:25.840 --> 00:35:28.810 align:middle line:84%
And all of a sudden, NAFTA
disappeared, as far as I could
00:35:28.810 --> 00:35:30.200 align:middle line:90%
see, from the agenda.
00:35:30.200 --> 00:35:32.320 align:middle line:84%
Because his delegates
didn\'t buy it.
00:35:32.320 --> 00:35:34.120 align:middle line:84%
They kept on saying, what
does NAFTA have
00:35:34.120 --> 00:35:35.590 align:middle line:90%
to do with our issues?
00:35:35.590 --> 00:35:37.610 align:middle line:84%
We are religious conservatives,
and we don\'t
00:35:37.610 --> 00:35:38.700 align:middle line:90%
care about NAFTA.
00:35:38.700 --> 00:35:41.190 align:middle line:84%
Ralph is defining Christian
Coalition\'s movement, but
00:35:41.190 --> 00:35:44.250 align:middle line:84%
certainly his movement
is not defining ours.
00:35:44.250 --> 00:35:48.280 align:middle line:84%
Most of us do not get involved
in the tax issues, health care
00:35:48.280 --> 00:35:50.090 align:middle line:84%
issues, the welfare
reform issues.
00:35:50.090 --> 00:35:52.270 align:middle line:90%
Ralph does, but we don\'t.
00:35:52.270 --> 00:35:55.200 align:middle line:84%
Despite Ralph\'s polling that
says to you that the Christian
00:35:55.200 --> 00:35:57.310 align:middle line:84%
Coalition members are as
concerned about economic
00:35:57.310 --> 00:35:59.950 align:middle line:84%
issues as anybody else, and
that economic issues are
00:35:59.950 --> 00:36:04.630 align:middle line:84%
family issues, I\'m not sure
their membership is there.
00:36:04.630 --> 00:36:09.160 align:middle line:84%
I think if your religion is
basically political, you have
00:36:09.160 --> 00:36:10.930 align:middle line:90%
to have a nemesis.
00:36:10.930 --> 00:36:13.140 align:middle line:84%
You have to have
an evil empire.
00:36:13.140 --> 00:36:16.540 align:middle line:84%
And after the collapse of the
Berlin Wall, you still have to
00:36:16.540 --> 00:36:17.410 align:middle line:90%
have the nemesis.
00:36:17.410 --> 00:36:19.580 align:middle line:84%
We shifted the nemesis
from the Soviet Union
00:36:19.580 --> 00:36:20.530 align:middle line:90%
to the United States.
00:36:20.530 --> 00:36:24.620 align:middle line:84%
We found the nemesis to
be other Americans.
00:36:24.620 --> 00:36:27.140 align:middle line:84%
And they had to come back and
say, well, bombs may not fall.
00:36:27.140 --> 00:36:28.540 align:middle line:90%
Well, tyranny may not rule.
00:36:28.540 --> 00:36:30.480 align:middle line:84%
Well, godlessness might
not prevail.
00:36:30.480 --> 00:36:32.980 align:middle line:84%
What will we do now to
keep people going?
00:36:32.980 --> 00:36:35.820 align:middle line:84%
And so homosexuality had proven
in other demographic
00:36:35.820 --> 00:36:38.910 align:middle line:84%
tests to be something that kind
of pushed the buttons in
00:36:38.910 --> 00:36:42.000 align:middle line:90%
folks, the fear buttons.
00:36:42.000 --> 00:36:46.820 align:middle line:84%
Any time you have an issue
that is polarizing, that
00:36:46.820 --> 00:36:50.900 align:middle line:84%
people can zero in on,
certainly, it\'s going to help
00:36:50.900 --> 00:36:52.020 align:middle line:90%
draw people.
00:36:52.020 --> 00:36:54.505 align:middle line:84%
And what happened with the
election of Bill Clinton and
00:36:54.505 --> 00:36:56.690 align:middle line:84%
his focus on those kinds
of issues is, it woke a
00:36:56.690 --> 00:36:57.840 align:middle line:90%
lot of people up.
00:36:57.840 --> 00:37:00.010 align:middle line:84%
And then you had Bill Clinton
come out of the shoot, after
00:37:00.010 --> 00:37:04.760 align:middle line:84%
the inauguration, and gaze
at the military.
00:37:04.760 --> 00:37:08.490 align:middle line:84%
I called it the monumental
wake-up call for people at the
00:37:08.490 --> 00:37:09.360 align:middle line:90%
grassroots.
00:37:09.360 --> 00:37:11.950 align:middle line:90%
It was astonishing to see.
00:37:11.950 --> 00:37:14.800 align:middle line:84%
It wasn\'t just for Christian
Coalition, veterans groups,
00:37:14.800 --> 00:37:17.340 align:middle line:84%
and pro-family groups and
conservative groups.
00:37:17.340 --> 00:37:21.950 align:middle line:84%
For organizations like mine,
the public reaction was
00:37:21.950 --> 00:37:23.870 align:middle line:90%
immediate and dramatic.
00:37:23.870 --> 00:37:28.100 align:middle line:84%
Long before we could do any
mailings about this, or really
00:37:28.100 --> 00:37:31.550 align:middle line:84%
talk about it to any great
extent, the mail started
00:37:31.550 --> 00:37:32.510 align:middle line:90%
pouring in.
00:37:32.510 --> 00:37:35.410 align:middle line:84%
The Wall Street Journal on
Wednesday said that your
00:37:35.410 --> 00:37:38.620 align:middle line:84%
organization had sounded a new
call to arms battling what you
00:37:38.620 --> 00:37:41.020 align:middle line:84%
perceive to be the spread of
homosexuality across the
00:37:41.020 --> 00:37:41.600 align:middle line:90%
United States.
00:37:41.600 --> 00:37:42.660 align:middle line:90%
Is that accurate?
00:37:42.660 --> 00:37:46.250 align:middle line:84%
No, that piece I thought was a
good piece, but in that one
00:37:46.250 --> 00:37:50.040 align:middle line:84%
area I don\'t think it
was very accurate.
00:37:50.040 --> 00:37:52.450 align:middle line:84%
I think this is going to be a
big issue in the coming years,
00:37:52.450 --> 00:37:55.150 align:middle line:84%
but I don\'t think it\'s because
we\'re making it a big issue.
00:37:55.150 --> 00:37:57.540 align:middle line:84%
I think Bill Clinton is
making it an issue.
00:37:57.540 --> 00:37:59.830 align:middle line:84%
I think other people are
making it an issue.
00:37:59.830 --> 00:38:03.390 align:middle line:84%
In November, Colorado votes on
a constitutional amendment to
00:38:03.390 --> 00:38:06.980 align:middle line:84%
ban communities from passing
laws to protect gays from
00:38:06.980 --> 00:38:08.800 align:middle line:90%
discrimination.
00:38:08.800 --> 00:38:10.600 align:middle line:90%
How many are there?
00:38:10.600 --> 00:38:12.190 align:middle line:90%
No one really knows.
00:38:12.190 --> 00:38:15.680 align:middle line:84%
And their propaganda is,
there are 10% of us.
00:38:15.680 --> 00:38:16.860 align:middle line:90%
Now maybe in some areas--
00:38:16.860 --> 00:38:20.240 align:middle line:84%
San Francisco I wouldn\'t doubt
that, New York I wouldn\'t
00:38:20.240 --> 00:38:20.640 align:middle line:90%
doubt that.
00:38:20.640 --> 00:38:24.210 align:middle line:84%
Washington, DC-- forget it,
I mean boy oh boy oh boy.
00:38:24.210 --> 00:38:26.050 align:middle line:84%
I was one of the founders of
the Colorado for Family
00:38:26.050 --> 00:38:27.810 align:middle line:84%
Values, so I\'ve always
been interested in
00:38:27.810 --> 00:38:29.060 align:middle line:90%
the Amendment 2 issue.
00:38:29.060 --> 00:38:31.620 align:middle line:84%
Just three of us met in the
basement of a church and
00:38:31.620 --> 00:38:33.300 align:middle line:84%
started talking about this
and what could be done.
00:38:33.300 --> 00:38:36.410 align:middle line:84%
Because we were being slowly
but surely strangled here.
00:38:36.410 --> 00:38:40.190 align:middle line:84%
This city gave special rights to
homosexuals, and now, they
00:38:40.190 --> 00:38:41.720 align:middle line:90%
can\'t stop this.
00:38:41.720 --> 00:38:43.660 align:middle line:84%
Do we want to protect
Colorado?
00:38:43.660 --> 00:38:44.730 align:middle line:90%
Yes we do.
00:38:44.730 --> 00:38:46.040 align:middle line:90%
Vote yes on 2.
00:38:46.040 --> 00:38:49.870 align:middle line:84%
The feeling among grassroots
pro-family people is, we are
00:38:49.870 --> 00:38:52.850 align:middle line:84%
having something foisted
upon us.
00:38:52.850 --> 00:38:56.660 align:middle line:84%
We are having a lifestyle, which
we believe is immoral,
00:38:56.660 --> 00:38:59.060 align:middle line:90%
foisted upon us.
00:38:59.060 --> 00:39:01.450 align:middle line:84%
Now, if they want to go out and
have homosexual sex like
00:39:01.450 --> 00:39:03.890 align:middle line:84%
people go out and have
heterosexual sex, and don\'t
00:39:03.890 --> 00:39:06.710 align:middle line:90%
create a movement around it--
00:39:06.710 --> 00:39:08.730 align:middle line:84%
because we don\'t have Adulterers
for America, or
00:39:08.730 --> 00:39:10.290 align:middle line:90%
Heterosexuals for America.
00:39:10.290 --> 00:39:14.570 align:middle line:84%
But we do have homosexuality
groups that are by the dozens.
00:39:14.570 --> 00:39:17.780 align:middle line:84%
And their program is to force
people to accept them.
00:39:17.780 --> 00:39:21.650 align:middle line:84%
The fact is that you don\'t
usually move swing voters
00:39:21.650 --> 00:39:23.180 align:middle line:90%
based on the economic issues.
00:39:23.180 --> 00:39:26.970 align:middle line:84%
You usually move them based on
cultural or moral and social
00:39:26.970 --> 00:39:31.970 align:middle line:84%
issues, whether it\'s Vietnam
or crime or quotas.
00:39:31.970 --> 00:39:35.300 align:middle line:84%
The adverse impact of the gay
community on our children, on
00:39:35.300 --> 00:39:38.652 align:middle line:84%
our schools, on our lifestyles
and the quality of life in our
00:39:38.652 --> 00:39:40.920 align:middle line:84%
communities, is revealed
in this video.
00:39:40.920 --> 00:39:42.610 align:middle line:84%
It\'s free to anybody
that wants to
00:39:42.610 --> 00:39:44.310 align:middle line:90%
show it to their friends.
00:39:44.310 --> 00:39:48.690 align:middle line:84%
Will society be forced to
surrender its standards?
00:39:48.690 --> 00:39:50.365 align:middle line:90%
Will the tide be turned?
00:39:50.365 --> 00:39:58.070 align:middle line:90%
00:39:58.070 --> 00:40:01.910 align:middle line:84%
I supported the opposition
to Amendment 2.
00:40:01.910 --> 00:40:06.680 align:middle line:84%
And I encouraged other
clergy to do so.
00:40:06.680 --> 00:40:10.190 align:middle line:84%
The debate had been framed
such that the, quote,
00:40:10.190 --> 00:40:14.360 align:middle line:84%
\"Christian Position\" would be
to support Amendment 2.
00:40:14.360 --> 00:40:16.510 align:middle line:90%
And I reject that.
00:40:16.510 --> 00:40:19.790 align:middle line:84%
I changed a lot while I was
working for these leaders of
00:40:19.790 --> 00:40:21.510 align:middle line:90%
the Christian right.
00:40:21.510 --> 00:40:24.210 align:middle line:84%
At first, I thought they were
right about homosexuality,
00:40:24.210 --> 00:40:26.970 align:middle line:84%
that it was a sickness,
or that it was a sin,
00:40:26.970 --> 00:40:28.365 align:middle line:90%
or that it was both.
00:40:28.365 --> 00:40:31.380 align:middle line:84%
And so I was going through
electric shock and aversive
00:40:31.380 --> 00:40:35.150 align:middle line:84%
therapy and exorcism and fasting
and prayer and various
00:40:35.150 --> 00:40:39.300 align:middle line:84%
kinds of reparative therapies
to get over being gay.
00:40:39.300 --> 00:40:42.340 align:middle line:84%
The only way we can change
people\'s minds is to be open
00:40:42.340 --> 00:40:44.960 align:middle line:90%
and honest about who we are.
00:40:44.960 --> 00:40:47.320 align:middle line:84%
So when I came out, I was hoping
that they would be able
00:40:47.320 --> 00:40:50.210 align:middle line:84%
then to reach out to all of
their Christian gays and
00:40:50.210 --> 00:40:52.130 align:middle line:84%
lesbians in their congregations
that they don\'t
00:40:52.130 --> 00:40:53.360 align:middle line:90%
admit are there.
00:40:53.360 --> 00:40:55.500 align:middle line:84%
And yet, imagine what would
happen if one Sunday, all the
00:40:55.500 --> 00:40:57.060 align:middle line:90%
gay organists quit playing.
00:40:57.060 --> 00:40:58.760 align:middle line:84%
There\'d be silenced
in Christendom.
00:40:58.760 --> 00:41:01.390 align:middle line:84%
The fact is, we are gay and
lesbian, and we\'re in all
00:41:01.390 --> 00:41:02.520 align:middle line:90%
their churches.
00:41:02.520 --> 00:41:05.000 align:middle line:84%
But they\'re insisting
on our being silent.
00:41:05.000 --> 00:41:11.830 align:middle line:84%
We don\'t think homosexuals,
heterosexuals, sadists,
00:41:11.830 --> 00:41:15.840 align:middle line:84%
masochists, polygamists, or
any other person based on
00:41:15.840 --> 00:41:19.540 align:middle line:84%
their private sexual conduct,
should receive preferential
00:41:19.540 --> 00:41:20.640 align:middle line:90%
status under the law.
00:41:20.640 --> 00:41:22.580 align:middle line:84%
If you want to call that special
rights for me to be
00:41:22.580 --> 00:41:25.130 align:middle line:84%
employed and have a job, if you
want to call it special
00:41:25.130 --> 00:41:28.310 align:middle line:84%
rights for me to get service in
a restaurant or be able to
00:41:28.310 --> 00:41:32.110 align:middle line:84%
use their restroom, if you think
it\'s special for me to
00:41:32.110 --> 00:41:37.040 align:middle line:84%
have a house to live in, then
you must be in denial or have
00:41:37.040 --> 00:41:38.720 align:middle line:90%
never read the Constitution.
00:41:38.720 --> 00:41:42.820 align:middle line:84%
When I sent the letter out to
5,000 clergy folks in Oregon,
00:41:42.820 --> 00:41:45.240 align:middle line:84%
and then in Colorado, it was
simply to say, these
00:41:45.240 --> 00:41:49.150 align:middle line:84%
initiatives are hurtful, they\'re
misinformed, and
00:41:49.150 --> 00:41:50.800 align:middle line:90%
they\'re wrong.
00:41:50.800 --> 00:41:54.220 align:middle line:84%
And it was my way of taking
a stand for God\'s gay and
00:41:54.220 --> 00:41:55.620 align:middle line:90%
lesbian children.
00:41:55.620 --> 00:41:58.320 align:middle line:84%
But at the same time, it was my
taking a stand for myself.
00:41:58.320 --> 00:42:01.100 align:middle line:84%
It was saying, look, you\'ve
given me all the prizes as a
00:42:01.100 --> 00:42:03.950 align:middle line:84%
filmmaker, you\'ve read all my
books, you\'ve used my Sunday
00:42:03.950 --> 00:42:06.830 align:middle line:84%
school curriculum, you know who
I am, you\'ve honored me,
00:42:06.830 --> 00:42:09.670 align:middle line:84%
and we\'ve share 25 years
of ministry together.
00:42:09.670 --> 00:42:12.170 align:middle line:84%
Now that I\'m being honest about
who I am, let\'s take it
00:42:12.170 --> 00:42:13.830 align:middle line:90%
another step.
00:42:13.830 --> 00:42:14.880 align:middle line:90%
But they couldn\'t.
00:42:14.880 --> 00:42:16.740 align:middle line:90%
They condemned me.
00:42:16.740 --> 00:42:20.150 align:middle line:84%
We believe the Bible is the
inerrant word of God.
00:42:20.150 --> 00:42:24.570 align:middle line:84%
We believe it\'s the inspired
word of God, and it is
00:42:24.570 --> 00:42:26.350 align:middle line:90%
absolute truth.
00:42:26.350 --> 00:42:31.360 align:middle line:84%
And the Bible says in there
that homosexuality is an
00:42:31.360 --> 00:42:33.830 align:middle line:90%
abomination.
00:42:33.830 --> 00:42:36.600 align:middle line:84%
If it were not for Bill
McCartney, we would have died.
00:42:36.600 --> 00:42:40.680 align:middle line:84%
Bill McCartney went on the Focus
network of stations, and
00:42:40.680 --> 00:42:43.210 align:middle line:90%
that helped a whole lot.
00:42:43.210 --> 00:42:50.330 align:middle line:84%
I believe very strongly in the
scripture, and I support what
00:42:50.330 --> 00:42:55.010 align:middle line:84%
the Bible has to say about
homosexuality.
00:42:55.010 --> 00:42:59.000 align:middle line:84%
I was intrigued by Coach Bill
McCartney at Colorado
00:42:59.000 --> 00:43:03.385 align:middle line:84%
University who quoted the thing
from Leviticus that it
00:43:03.385 --> 00:43:08.550 align:middle line:84%
is an abomination in the eyes
of the Lord for a man to lie
00:43:08.550 --> 00:43:09.870 align:middle line:90%
with another man.
00:43:09.870 --> 00:43:12.030 align:middle line:84%
And I read a little further in
Leviticus, and it said it is
00:43:12.030 --> 00:43:15.490 align:middle line:84%
an abomination in the eyes of
the Lord to touch the skin of
00:43:15.490 --> 00:43:16.380 align:middle line:90%
a dead pig.
00:43:16.380 --> 00:43:18.585 align:middle line:84%
And I thought, uh oh, there
goes football at CU.
00:43:18.585 --> 00:43:21.340 align:middle line:90%
00:43:21.340 --> 00:43:26.240 align:middle line:84%
Hey, hey, ho, ho, Bill McCartney
has got to go.
00:43:26.240 --> 00:43:30.650 align:middle line:84%
Hey, hey, ho, ho, Bill McCartney
has got to go.
00:43:30.650 --> 00:43:34.580 align:middle line:84%
Hey, hey, ho, ho, Bill McCartney
has got to go.
00:43:34.580 --> 00:43:37.080 align:middle line:84%
University of Colorado football
coach Bill McCartney
00:43:37.080 --> 00:43:39.740 align:middle line:84%
says he will continue to support
a group that seeks to
00:43:39.740 --> 00:43:43.290 align:middle line:84%
ban gay rights, but says he\'ll
be more careful of using his
00:43:43.290 --> 00:43:45.820 align:middle line:84%
title when it comes to
campaign literature.
00:43:45.820 --> 00:43:48.740 align:middle line:84%
And because I\'m a football
coach, I\'m not going to be
00:43:48.740 --> 00:43:55.030 align:middle line:84%
suppressed and hold my tongue
about the things that I see
00:43:55.030 --> 00:44:00.230 align:middle line:84%
that are tearing at the
fabric of our society.
00:44:00.230 --> 00:44:03.530 align:middle line:84%
I don\'t think people in
Denver expected the
00:44:03.530 --> 00:44:05.150 align:middle line:90%
amendment to pass.
00:44:05.150 --> 00:44:08.970 align:middle line:84%
I was surprised by the margin
of victory of the amendment.
00:44:08.970 --> 00:44:12.002 align:middle line:90%
00:44:12.002 --> 00:44:14.670 align:middle line:84%
This group of protesters just
came in just a few minutes ago
00:44:14.670 --> 00:44:17.460 align:middle line:84%
to democratic headquarters
here in Denver.
00:44:17.460 --> 00:44:21.170 align:middle line:84%
These people are clearly upset
with the decision tonight on
00:44:21.170 --> 00:44:24.285 align:middle line:90%
Amendment 2.
00:44:24.285 --> 00:44:25.780 align:middle line:90%
This is Family News In Focus.
00:44:25.780 --> 00:44:27.530 align:middle line:84%
For Rob Gregory,
I\'m Pete Wynn.
00:44:27.530 --> 00:44:30.410 align:middle line:84%
Pro-family leaders say the
biggest win was in Colorado.
00:44:30.410 --> 00:44:32.870 align:middle line:84%
Voters in that state amended
the state constitution to
00:44:32.870 --> 00:44:36.180 align:middle line:84%
repeal existing special
privileges laws and to stop
00:44:36.180 --> 00:44:38.640 align:middle line:84%
any future pro-homosexual
measures.
00:44:38.640 --> 00:44:42.040 align:middle line:84%
Kevin Thibodeau of Colorado
for Family Values says his
00:44:42.040 --> 00:44:43.850 align:middle line:90%
group beat the odds.
00:44:43.850 --> 00:44:47.270 align:middle line:84%
And I think it speaks loud
and clear for what
00:44:47.270 --> 00:44:48.420 align:middle line:90%
truth can really do.
00:44:48.420 --> 00:44:51.350 align:middle line:84%
You live with the fact that
majority rules, and Colorado
00:44:51.350 --> 00:44:53.625 align:middle line:90%
voted your rights out.
00:44:53.625 --> 00:44:56.595 align:middle line:84%
I have to live with
the fact that Bill
00:44:56.595 --> 00:44:58.080 align:middle line:90%
Clinton is my next president.
00:44:58.080 --> 00:44:59.565 align:middle line:84%
You live with it, you
bunch of perverts.
00:44:59.565 --> 00:45:07.980 align:middle line:90%
00:45:07.980 --> 00:45:10.455 align:middle line:90%
We love Jesus, yes we do.
00:45:10.455 --> 00:45:11.940 align:middle line:90%
We love Jesus, how about you?
00:45:11.940 --> 00:45:13.425 align:middle line:90%
We love Jesus, yes we do.
00:45:13.425 --> 00:45:18.890 align:middle line:90%
We love Jesus, how about you?
00:45:18.890 --> 00:45:24.992 align:middle line:84%
The Lord put me in touch with
what he would do with men, or
00:45:24.992 --> 00:45:28.910 align:middle line:84%
men and boys, who would come
together in the name of Jesus
00:45:28.910 --> 00:45:29.640 align:middle line:90%
of Nazareth.
00:45:29.640 --> 00:45:34.220 align:middle line:84%
And I\'m telling you, there\'s
no end to this.
00:45:34.220 --> 00:45:37.240 align:middle line:84%
In the wake of Amendment 2,
Coach Bill McCartney turned
00:45:37.240 --> 00:45:40.265 align:middle line:84%
away from politics to devote
full-time to Promise Keepers,
00:45:40.265 --> 00:45:43.620 align:middle line:84%
a ministry he founded to
encourage men to reclaim their
00:45:43.620 --> 00:45:45.720 align:middle line:84%
place in church and
family life.
00:45:45.720 --> 00:45:49.010 align:middle line:90%
00:45:49.010 --> 00:45:51.850 align:middle line:84%
A coalition of groups that
demonstrated on the Boulder
00:45:51.850 --> 00:45:55.620 align:middle line:84%
campus earlier today sees the
Promise Keepers agenda as a
00:45:55.620 --> 00:45:59.390 align:middle line:84%
political one, a threat to
cultural, social, and sexual
00:45:59.390 --> 00:46:01.745 align:middle line:84%
diversity, centered on
the popularity of
00:46:01.745 --> 00:46:03.635 align:middle line:90%
the CU football coach.
00:46:03.635 --> 00:46:07.130 align:middle line:84%
Promise Keepers has never been
involved in Amendment 2.
00:46:07.130 --> 00:46:12.210 align:middle line:84%
That happened with me on a
personal note prior to the
00:46:12.210 --> 00:46:13.950 align:middle line:90%
beginning of Promise Keepers.
00:46:13.950 --> 00:46:17.930 align:middle line:84%
Promise Keepers has always
maintained an identity that
00:46:17.930 --> 00:46:20.030 align:middle line:84%
stayed out of the
political scene.
00:46:20.030 --> 00:46:24.150 align:middle line:84%
And the reason for that is
because we\'re not looking to
00:46:24.150 --> 00:46:26.140 align:middle line:90%
man to solve our problems.
00:46:26.140 --> 00:46:27.720 align:middle line:90%
We\'re looking to the Lord.
00:46:27.720 --> 00:46:35.070 align:middle line:90%
[SINGING]
00:46:35.070 --> 00:46:39.640 align:middle line:84%
What is the political motivation
or intent of
00:46:39.640 --> 00:46:41.460 align:middle line:90%
Promise Keepers?
00:46:41.460 --> 00:46:45.970 align:middle line:84%
We have no candidates to
endorse, no partisan political
00:46:45.970 --> 00:46:47.580 align:middle line:90%
agendas to promote.
00:46:47.580 --> 00:46:50.250 align:middle line:84%
We won\'t be distracted
by those things.
00:46:50.250 --> 00:46:53.180 align:middle line:84%
And I want to emphasize
\"distracted.\"
00:46:53.180 --> 00:46:59.060 align:middle line:84%
We are not against stuff by
coming together except sin in
00:46:59.060 --> 00:47:01.610 align:middle line:84%
our lives and sin in
our societies.
00:47:01.610 --> 00:47:02.860 align:middle line:90%
Amen, you guys?
00:47:02.860 --> 00:47:05.310 align:middle line:90%
00:47:05.310 --> 00:47:08.880 align:middle line:84%
We believe that there\'s a
void, a vacuum, in every
00:47:08.880 --> 00:47:13.560 align:middle line:84%
person, in every creature, that
only Christ can fill.
00:47:13.560 --> 00:47:20.660 align:middle line:84%
It\'s very easy to see in some of
the men here the need to be
00:47:20.660 --> 00:47:24.010 align:middle line:84%
strengthened in the way that
they handle family affairs.
00:47:24.010 --> 00:47:27.310 align:middle line:84%
And I think that one of the
things that Promise Keepers
00:47:27.310 --> 00:47:32.390 align:middle line:84%
does is it helps the men
to recognize how
00:47:32.390 --> 00:47:34.165 align:middle line:90%
critical a role they play.
00:47:34.165 --> 00:47:37.260 align:middle line:90%
00:47:37.260 --> 00:47:40.650 align:middle line:84%
Did you ever stop to think about
your wife being one of
00:47:40.650 --> 00:47:44.950 align:middle line:84%
God\'s daughters just like you\'re
one of God\'s sons?
00:47:44.950 --> 00:47:48.300 align:middle line:84%
And how do you want men to
treat your daughter?
00:47:48.300 --> 00:47:51.490 align:middle line:84%
That\'s the way you need
to treat your wife.
00:47:51.490 --> 00:47:56.480 align:middle line:84%
Christian women complain more
about men\'s nominal
00:47:56.480 --> 00:47:59.920 align:middle line:84%
Christianity and their
unwillingness to assume
00:47:59.920 --> 00:48:03.570 align:middle line:84%
leadership in their families
than anything else.
00:48:03.570 --> 00:48:06.930 align:middle line:90%
00:48:06.930 --> 00:48:09.950 align:middle line:84%
Christianity says, be opposite
of what the world says.
00:48:09.950 --> 00:48:12.820 align:middle line:84%
What the world says is, show
me and I\'ll believe.
00:48:12.820 --> 00:48:17.816 align:middle line:84%
Christianity says, believe
and you shall see.
00:48:17.816 --> 00:48:21.240 align:middle line:84%
If you want your sin forgiven
tonight, if you want that
00:48:21.240 --> 00:48:24.550 align:middle line:84%
emptiness in your life filled,
or you\'ve fallen away from the
00:48:24.550 --> 00:48:27.840 align:middle line:84%
Lord and you want to come back,
get up out of your seat.
00:48:27.840 --> 00:48:29.054 align:middle line:90%
Get up and come.
00:48:29.054 --> 00:48:40.920 align:middle line:90%
[SINGING]
00:48:40.920 --> 00:48:44.115 align:middle line:84%
Jesus said that whosoever would
come to him he would in
00:48:44.115 --> 00:48:46.040 align:middle line:90%
no way cast out.
00:48:46.040 --> 00:48:48.650 align:middle line:84%
But then again, you\'re not too
good to come to Christ,
00:48:48.650 --> 00:48:50.170 align:middle line:90%
because we\'re all sinners.
00:48:50.170 --> 00:48:51.470 align:middle line:90%
We all need him.
00:48:51.470 --> 00:48:54.235 align:middle line:84%
Don\'t let this opportunity
slip by.
00:48:54.235 --> 00:48:59.500 align:middle line:90%
00:48:59.500 --> 00:49:04.060 align:middle line:84%
The second Corinthians teaches
us that we\'ve been given the
00:49:04.060 --> 00:49:06.510 align:middle line:90%
ministry of reconciliation.
00:49:06.510 --> 00:49:08.710 align:middle line:84%
Reconciliation, which is really
I think what the church
00:49:08.710 --> 00:49:12.660 align:middle line:84%
ought to be primarily about
in one way or another.
00:49:12.660 --> 00:49:18.610 align:middle line:90%
[SINGING]
00:49:18.610 --> 00:49:23.910 align:middle line:84%
Promise Keepers was making a
concerted effort to alter the
00:49:23.910 --> 00:49:29.470 align:middle line:84%
image that it had as a white
male movement, and were
00:49:29.470 --> 00:49:32.760 align:middle line:84%
intentionally seeking
to involve
00:49:32.760 --> 00:49:35.040 align:middle line:90%
African American leaders.
00:49:35.040 --> 00:49:36.840 align:middle line:90%
Bless them that curse me.
00:49:36.840 --> 00:49:37.950 align:middle line:90%
When have you ever done that?
00:49:37.950 --> 00:49:40.940 align:middle line:84%
Do good to them-- isn\'t
this incredible--
00:49:40.940 --> 00:49:42.800 align:middle line:90%
that hate you.
00:49:42.800 --> 00:49:45.200 align:middle line:90%
Now, this is something.
00:49:45.200 --> 00:49:50.340 align:middle line:84%
I know that I don\'t even start
showing my Christianity until
00:49:50.340 --> 00:49:54.320 align:middle line:84%
I get around some brother
who doesn\'t like me.
00:49:54.320 --> 00:49:57.430 align:middle line:84%
So that\'s why I love rednecks
who don\'t like me.
00:49:57.430 --> 00:49:58.710 align:middle line:90%
I\'m talking rednecks--
00:49:58.710 --> 00:50:01.730 align:middle line:84%
7-Eleven stopping, high truck
riding, Confederate flag
00:50:01.730 --> 00:50:04.560 align:middle line:84%
toting, tobacco chewing,
spitting rednecks.
00:50:04.560 --> 00:50:06.012 align:middle line:90%
I love those brothers.
00:50:06.012 --> 00:50:14.240 align:middle line:90%
00:50:14.240 --> 00:50:17.320 align:middle line:84%
When you create personal
responsibility, it\'s because
00:50:17.320 --> 00:50:20.750 align:middle line:84%
men like you decide to keep
their promises to God and to
00:50:20.750 --> 00:50:22.440 align:middle line:84%
their families and
to their country.
00:50:22.440 --> 00:50:25.730 align:middle line:84%
That\'s what brings personal
responsibility to America, not
00:50:25.730 --> 00:50:27.185 align:middle line:90%
what the congress does.
00:50:27.185 --> 00:50:30.580 align:middle line:90%
00:50:30.580 --> 00:50:32.520 align:middle line:84%
I don\'t take them to
the White House.
00:50:32.520 --> 00:50:35.330 align:middle line:84%
I take them to the steps
of the alters of God.
00:50:35.330 --> 00:50:36.530 align:middle line:84%
This generation doesn\'t
need Washington.
00:50:36.530 --> 00:50:38.024 align:middle line:90%
They need heaven.
00:50:38.024 --> 00:50:44.996 align:middle line:90%
00:50:44.996 --> 00:51:29.260 align:middle line:90%
[MUSIC PLAYING]
00:51:29.260 --> 00:51:33.770 align:middle line:84%
God\'s had an awfully hard time
keeping his folks on track.
00:51:33.770 --> 00:51:36.570 align:middle line:84%
From the very beginning when
he draws them into his
00:51:36.570 --> 00:51:41.530 align:middle line:84%
service, they hear the whisper
on the wind like Abraham did.
00:51:41.530 --> 00:51:45.920 align:middle line:84%
All that pure energy of God that
he pours out on us is so
00:51:45.920 --> 00:51:49.480 align:middle line:90%
precious and so motivating.
00:51:49.480 --> 00:51:53.320 align:middle line:84%
But as soon as we move to try
to organize it, we find
00:51:53.320 --> 00:51:54.930 align:middle line:90%
ourselves accommodating it.
00:51:54.930 --> 00:51:59.720 align:middle line:84%
And we set our own goals, and
we become writers of God\'s
00:51:59.720 --> 00:52:01.690 align:middle line:90%
legislative intention.
00:52:01.690 --> 00:52:07.640 align:middle line:90%
[SINGING]
00:52:07.640 --> 00:52:11.380 align:middle line:84%
To my friends in Christian
leadership, I would say, you
00:52:11.380 --> 00:52:13.250 align:middle line:90%
have no choice.
00:52:13.250 --> 00:52:15.820 align:middle line:84%
What if they gave a war,
and nobody came?
00:52:15.820 --> 00:52:17.930 align:middle line:90%
The war would come to you.
00:52:17.930 --> 00:52:20.130 align:middle line:84%
You\'ve got to fight for the sake
of your children and your
00:52:20.130 --> 00:52:20.540 align:middle line:90%
grandchildren.
00:52:20.540 --> 00:52:23.990 align:middle line:84%
Because if we don\'t fight,
we will continue to lose.
00:52:23.990 --> 00:52:26.150 align:middle line:84%
And our grandchildren will look
back at us, and they will
00:52:26.150 --> 00:52:27.080 align:middle line:90%
curse our memory.
00:52:27.080 --> 00:52:32.030 align:middle line:84%
Beware of those who want to
assume the power and the
00:52:32.030 --> 00:52:37.360 align:middle line:84%
levers of Caesar to usher
in the Kingdom of God.
00:52:37.360 --> 00:52:38.810 align:middle line:90%
Shall we pray?
00:52:38.810 --> 00:52:44.160 align:middle line:84%
That oftentimes, the more
politically-involved that the
00:52:44.160 --> 00:52:48.080 align:middle line:84%
church has become, the
less spiritual
00:52:48.080 --> 00:52:51.000 align:middle line:90%
influence the church is.
00:52:51.000 --> 00:52:54.450 align:middle line:84%
If Christians are simply more
concerned about what they
00:52:54.450 --> 00:52:57.390 align:middle line:84%
believe, why they believe it,
and are more concerned about
00:52:57.390 --> 00:53:01.780 align:middle line:84%
living that out faithfully as
disciples in an increasingly
00:53:01.780 --> 00:53:07.700 align:middle line:84%
shallow and dark age,
then we will see
00:53:07.700 --> 00:53:09.560 align:middle line:90%
changes in the culture.
00:53:09.560 --> 00:53:13.736 align:middle line:84%
I\'m sick and tired of hearing
about all of the radicals and
00:53:13.736 --> 00:53:15.340 align:middle line:90%
the perverts.
00:53:15.340 --> 00:53:18.530 align:middle line:84%
I think sometimes in this
great religious right
00:53:18.530 --> 00:53:20.510 align:middle line:84%
influence, we get caught
up in policy.
00:53:20.510 --> 00:53:24.470 align:middle line:84%
It\'s time for guns, people,
to come out of the closet.
00:53:24.470 --> 00:53:26.370 align:middle line:84%
Who\'s going to win
at the polls?
00:53:26.370 --> 00:53:29.630 align:middle line:84%
While winning at the polls, we
can be losing in the long run
00:53:29.630 --> 00:53:32.930 align:middle line:84%
by alienating the heart,
hardening the heart of people
00:53:32.930 --> 00:53:36.880 align:middle line:84%
we\'re actually called to help,
making them an enemy--
00:53:36.880 --> 00:53:40.020 align:middle line:84%
not loving our enemy like Jesus
is, but despising them,
00:53:40.020 --> 00:53:42.300 align:middle line:84%
and seeing to it they
actually despise us.
00:53:42.300 --> 00:53:44.340 align:middle line:84%
At one time, they were the
folks who were being
00:53:44.340 --> 00:53:47.250 align:middle line:84%
sufficient to their
cause by simply
00:53:47.250 --> 00:53:49.220 align:middle line:90%
shooting at other ideas.
00:53:49.220 --> 00:53:51.780 align:middle line:84%
Now they\'ve got advanced
ideas that work.
00:53:51.780 --> 00:53:56.690 align:middle line:84%
And in that role, the jury\'s
out as to whether they can
00:53:56.690 --> 00:53:58.670 align:middle line:84%
measure up to that
task or not.
00:53:58.670 --> 00:54:01.430 align:middle line:84%
We wanted to be able to be for
people of faith what the
00:54:01.430 --> 00:54:04.430 align:middle line:84%
AFL-CIO was for unions, or what
the Chamber of Commerce
00:54:04.430 --> 00:54:05.700 align:middle line:90%
is for business.
00:54:05.700 --> 00:54:08.090 align:middle line:84%
We wanted to be a permanent
fixture on the American
00:54:08.090 --> 00:54:09.260 align:middle line:90%
political landscape.
00:54:09.260 --> 00:54:13.530 align:middle line:84%
We\'re going to stay and stay
and stay if it takes three
00:54:13.530 --> 00:54:16.780 align:middle line:84%
presidents and six congresses
to pass these items.
00:54:16.780 --> 00:54:18.510 align:middle line:84%
We\'re going to be there in the
morning, we\'re going to be
00:54:18.510 --> 00:54:20.540 align:middle line:84%
there at night when they
turn the lights out.
00:54:20.540 --> 00:54:23.260 align:middle line:84%
We will be there as long as it
takes to see that these issues
00:54:23.260 --> 00:54:24.510 align:middle line:90%
are addressed.
00:54:24.510 --> 00:54:26.200 align:middle line:90%
00:54:26.200 --> 00:54:29.110 align:middle line:90%
Shall we pray?
00:54:29.110 --> 00:54:32.520 align:middle line:84%
Our Father, we pray that, as
we come to the end of this
00:54:32.520 --> 00:54:37.390 align:middle line:84%
ceremony, that we will dedicate
ourselves anew, not
00:54:37.390 --> 00:54:42.430 align:middle line:84%
only to you, but to America, and
all the great ideals that
00:54:42.430 --> 00:54:44.280 align:middle line:90%
we stand for.
00:54:44.280 --> 00:54:47.470 align:middle line:84%
We pray again that thou has
blessed the president and the
00:54:47.470 --> 00:54:48.295 align:middle line:90%
vice president.
00:54:48.295 --> 00:54:53.701 align:middle line:84%
In the name of the Father and
of the Son and of the Holy
00:54:53.701 --> 00:54:56.683 align:middle line:90%
Spirit, amen.
00:54:56.683 --> 00:55:46.383 align:middle line:90%
