Marielle Franco (July 27, 1979 – March 14, 2018) was a Brazilian politician, sociologist, feminist, and human rights activist. Born and raised in the Maré favela complex in Rio de Janeiro, she became a vocal advocate for marginalized communities, particularly Afro-Brazilians, women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and favela residents. A member of the Socialism and Liberty Party (PSOL), she was elected to Rio’s City Council in 2016 with the fifth-highest vote total. As a councilwoman, she fought against police violence, systemic racism, and inequality while championing social justice and human rights.

On March 14, 2018, Franco was assassinated in a targeted attack after attending an event on empowering Black women. Her murder shocked Brazil and the world, sparking global protests and calls for justice. Franco remains a symbol of resistance against oppression and a powerful voice for those historically excluded from political representation.
