In light of the gradual weakening of Brazilian democracy, the upheavals caused by the justice system in recent years already seem distant. Beyond the politicization of justice, there are still deep distortions and problems that echo the injustices of our history.
Series Description
Republic of Judges presents an overview of key events in Brazilian politics, including the promulgation of the 1988 Constitution, the Mensalão trial, and Operation Lava-Jato, to explore the growing role of the Judiciary in the country’s current power structure.
Each of the five episodes focuses on a different aspect of the Judiciary, examining the increasing influence of judges and prosecutors across various levels of the justice system.
Joaquim Barbosa, Rodrigo Janot, Deltan Dallagnol, and Sérgio Moro appear as central figures in this process. However, the series goes beyond individual personalities, identifying structural issues within the Judiciary that contribute to the system’s persistent dysfunctions.
