Fraser River is a rather
special river, I think.

It's by discharge the 77th
largest river in the world,

which doesn't sound to
impressive but when you think

thousands of rivers,

it is quite an impressive river.

It's also interesting
because it's one of the few

major rivers in the world
on which the main stem,

the main channel, is not dammed,

and so it still contains
its historic runs of salmon.

It still flows from mountains to sea

The sediment transport in Fraser River

is rather interesting, it
moves about 18 million tons

of material into the sea every year.

That sounds like a lot, but
it's rather a modest load

in relation to the loads of sediment

that come from other world rivers.

Most of that sediment is
fine material that washes out

the Strait of Georgia.

But there is a small
load, perhaps four or five

hundred thousand tons a
year, of gravel and sand

that comes out of the
canyons and is deposited

rich biodiverse area.

As we develop the area,
we inevitably disturb

these habitats in serious ways.

the lower 35 kilometers

of the river in order that sea-going ships

That takes sand out of
the bottom of the river

and it's this sand that forms the delta.

Some of that sand goes into
the construction trades

of it is dumped offshore

we've been able to estimate

is that area of the province where

most of the population lives

and where growth is by far the greatest.

So, slowly, the whole lower
mainland is becoming urbanized.

we'll be almost completely urbanized.

Within this urban area, the Fraser River

is the one natural landscape feature

otherwise unbroken urbanism.

decline in salmon stocks

across the five species in the Fraser.

Of course, the fish farms on
the coast are seen as being

a major source for transmitting
diseases to wild salmon.

But there are also other problems,

dramatic transformation

Hope Slough so that it is

has been impacted by

that's in Chilliwack.

And it is not really

is an issue all across the lower mainland

because the lower Fraser has
about 600 kilometers of dikes.

And what these have done is, essentially,

disconnected the small
tributaries and smaller sloughs

naturally into the Fraser River.

When you create that dike
and you put up a wall,
